Bluelight weekly photography contest Round 135 : Waterways

IMG_6485.jpg

A friend's ex taking a dip after a hike. Great pic though. That water was cold as fuck I bet.

did you take the pic?

Wow Harley thats some shot!
Yeah it is getting WAY to harder to choose, or feel like you can even enter considering what you are up against.

Umm ok we got a lot of ppl saying "thats not a waterway", how are we gonna deal with that one?

Yes, I would imagine that some of these are not waterways, but i don't think it really matters.

Here's a definition from wikipedia:

A waterway is any navigable body of water. These include rivers, lakes, seas, oceans, and canals. In order for a waterway to be navigable, it must meet several criteria:

* The waterway must be deep enough to allow the draft depth of the vessels using it;
* The waterway must be wide enough to allow passage for the beam width of the vessels using it;
* The waterway must be free of barriers to navigation such as waterfalls and rapids, or have a way around them (such as canal locks and boat lifts);
* The current of the waterway must be mild enough to allow vessels to make headway.

Vessels using waterways vary from small animal-drawn barges to immense ocean tankers and ocean liners, such as cruise ships.

Stonehappy's and Ocean's choices don't look especially navigable, but I say, who cares...

I'll give you an answer to that when we see the vote. ;)

Its a shame because I was torn between two pictures. The first I put up was of a small boat of Laotian boys paddling up a river. Then there were loads of waterfall pictures entered and I thought 'hold on, so waterfalls are ok are they?' - and changed my picture to the rainbow waterfall.

Ho-hum.

^^ Nothin' saying you can't change it back again.
I personally really liked the pic of the Laotian boys in the river :)

Hey everybody, I haven't contributed to this contest in quite a while, let alone bl in general. I have been quite busy this past year. However, I think I may try and get back into the groove now that I have a wealth of new photos! Cheers

I took this one last month in Koh Phi Phi Leh - an island in Southern Thailand

Lovely as the pics are, I still think they violate the rules for this week's round (p.s. Thanks Mr. P for editing his - and wonderful new pic too!).

There has been a "water" theme before and there has (or will be? not sure) a "waterfalls" theme.

Waterfalls, cliffs, and ponds are not waterways, beautiful as they may be. I'm sorry.

p.s. I believe many image-shack pics have been hacked by "anti-sec". Whatever their motives may be, they certainly aren't articulate enough to make me understand what they want...

I know I have some that I took when I was on the ferry from Ireland coming back to Wales.
Is ocean really a waterway? There isn't like movement. Thats what I think of when someone says waterway.
But anyway, I mean I wasn't trying to be artistic or anything. I was just enjoying and documenting my first and likely only (:() trip to the UK.
I kinda don't even wanna post it because like I said it's nothing special and compared to all the other AMAZING photos my pics with my POS camera will look like warmed over dog poo side to side or just in general...

You never know, sometimes a grainy quality adds a unique character that suits a photo better than perfect sharpness would.

Or maybe someone will see something in your photo that you dont. I think if you have a picture suitable to the theme, you should post it :)

I agree that some of the entries aren't actual waterways but I think they should be allowed, not everyone knows the definition and that shouldn't count against them.

I took this photo on a cold winter day. I was at the ferry terminal on the San Francisco side of the San Francisco Bay, looking south and eastward toward the Port of Oakland. The bridge is the Bay Bridge which connects San Francisco with Oakland.

The definition of waterway has been met in this case. :)

The day was as freezing and gray as it looks, and the photo reflected my mood at the time.
