dont know if its been brought up or if this is the proper area but i had a thought the other day.

you know how facebook has the messaging system. like it shows which friends are online and you can have a conversation with them sort of like an instant message?

i think it would be a cool addition to Bluelight. it would show you which of your friends are logged in and would allow you to communicate via instant message if need be. would be a way to communicate in real time rather than sending a PM and waiting for a reply. im sure there would also be a way so allow MODs and ADMINS to better help new users with simple things, or questions etc.

The current friends thing does actually show you which of your friends are online (unless they are set to invisible I think). The real time chat thing has been brought up numerous times and isnt likely to happen any time soon...

We've been getting compared to FB an awful lot lately :\
BL is better and it was here first! :!

;)

You can put your IM handles in your profile and you can click on the IM symbols underneath another member's post count in their data to the right of their post to send them an IM message.

yes, i understand all of this. you can click the IM link and send him a link to an outsourced program. my opinion was that it would be much cooler/easier to have a inhouse messaging system.

and who the hell would/has compared BL to facebook? i see absolutely no correlation between the two.

this.

plus irc.

tryign to code something in-house would just be too much effort for basically no benefit, since anything that it could accomplish can already be done better by other programs.

There was a thread concerning something like a "like" button and I've definitely seen real time chat discussed before too.

Totally agreed. I run FB's live chat through iChat because, honestly Facebook hasn't figured out how the hell to make a halfway decent chat client yet. AIM and several others have had a decade or so to figure out online live chatting, so I think it's best to keep BL and chatting separate. You can always PM someone, and if they are online they get a notification --- if the conversation progresses you can offer chat client information.

this.

ain't no need for us to reinvent the wheel and try to be all things to all men/women. we do what we do best, and others do what they do best.

plus none of the staff get paid a penny for the work we do here, so i'm not seeing any motivation to do even more work for nuthin', lol. ;)

if you send a PM and have to wait for a reply, well, you'll just have to wait. this isn't a real time chat service i'm afraid.

im seeing it more as an observation and recomendation than a comparison, but sure whatever you say.

anyway, so what it boils down to is that the work is not worth they pay off. gotcha.

Yeah BL ED IRC chat is pretty popular, lot's of BLers hang out there.

Regarding you suggestion, I think a lot of people would like to more social network style features, but the reality of the situation is that something like that would be pretty difficult to code and maintain. I don't think BL has the resources for that sort of thing.

Thats true. I would like someway know who else is online.
Like now it would really work kuz i took advice from someone and they signed out, but I need to know if whats happening is because of the advice

Everyone who has used Buelight within the last fifteen minutes, has not chosen to be invisible, and has not signed out has their name at the bottom of the forum view. http://www.bluelight.ru/vb/ There name is also visible on the bottom of the forum they have last viewed if those conditions are met. In IRC it usually shows who is active or dormant. You can set up your IRC client to only show active users. I'm probably not using the right terms here.

Is that you were asking? If you want to know about visibility with different IM protocols I'd either start a thread in our Science and Technology forum or consult IM client's help files and FAQs.

eeazy1986 Welcome to Bluelight. You can PM staff as a greenlighter, the not having PM ability as a greenlighter applies to PMs to regular members.

The way I usually do it is to look at the persons profile by clicking their name to the left of their post, then choosing the contact info tab tab on their profile. From there I click 'send a private message to membername.
