alright guys make sure this week to lock in your votes for books i will be chosing friday and making a new thread.

Mehm, any specific Vonegut?

any and all. i could give God Bless you Mr. Goldwater another read because its commentary on the value of money is fitting for the day. All of his books have this common theme though.

Slaughter House 5 is an instant classic, but one of his longer reads.

okay, I might not be able to participate in this until January or February. I'm in the process of getting ready for grad school (English, hehe), so I have PLENTY of reading and stress as it is. After I finish the application process and all its niceties, I'll be able to read like a fiend.

I'll decide if I'm in depending on what book you guys pick and whether or not I think I'll have time to read it in a month. I wish I was a faster reader. :(. I was going to read Daphne DuMaurier's "Rebecca" next. It seems like everyone has read that book but me though, so you guys have probably already read it huh?

alright guys today is the last day to post book suggestions before i randomly pick them out of a hat. the more books the more likely we get a diverse selection.

Here's some of the other books we had as options before:

Survivor by Chuck Palahniuk
Animal Farm by George Orwell
Written on the Body by Jeanette Winterson
A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry
Spook Country by William Gibson
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
Ishmael by Daniel Quinn
The Room by Hubert Selby Jr.
Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer
Junky by William S. Burroughs
The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test by T. Wolfe

I can see the merits of two threads, but I don't think there will be enough traffic to support it. The NSFW tags are a good idea. I just think splitting the discussion up will make it a more difficult to have everyone included and will make for less interesting discussion. If there were more people involved, say 20 or 30, it may work okay to have two threads, but with only around 10 people I think it will result in both threads stagnating.

Also, there's a TV show in Australia called the First Tuesday Book Club and you can find the books they've read here: http://www.abc.net.au/tv/firsttuesday/archive/

Maybe one of those would be good?

Those are some good choices at the tuesday book club. We have at least one on that list that a bl member suggested. I am picking 2-3 more to add to the pool. Selections will be posted in an hour we will have two weeks before the book club starts in order to allow all the slackers on Bluelight to either finish what they are reading or enough time to buy or get down to the library for a copy. Most of the books i will be chosing will be older with perhaps one or more that may be to new. Once we see what works for the book club we can modify the rules and regulations of this club.

cheers

alright guys here is the list of 6 books that were chosen from 22 entries. I assigned numbers and had someone chose 6 different ones.

The Mysterious Stranger Mark Twain
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mysterious_Stranger

Ishmael by Daniel Quinn
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ishmael_by_Daniel_Quinn
(if everyone enjoys this one we have the option to read the other 2 in the series before moving on. From what i hear though it can be read stand alone without the others)

The Solid Mandala by Patrick White
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Solid_Mandala

Cats Cradle kurt vonnegut
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat's_Cradle

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/And_Then_There_Were_None

"Rebecca" Daphne DuMaurier's
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebecca_(novel)

Let me know if any of these books are no goes for you. But so far i have not heard any dissent.

We might as well read these in the order I have placed them. the first one is the mysterious stranger. It is only 100 pages it is dealing with mark twains idea of what the devil is. Technically it is a work that is unfinished but even so has been greated with warm reception and much deliberation.

check out this link for a small example of what the book may be like:

I already have an unread copy of The Solid Mandala. I'm kind of too busy to read much right now so I might sit it out 'til then. I'm also interested in trying some Vonnegut so that works for me too...

I've read the Patrick White (like the good little Australian I am) but haven't read any of the others and don't think I would have if I wasn't doing it for this. I'm assuming the Twain shouldn't be too hard to track down.

^^^ i agree with you, these books besides the twain and Kurt Vonnegut were not typically my choices, but now that i have read brief synopses of them i am intrigued. I linked twains work so that those who could not find it would be able to read it for free online, hopefully this will encourage no money stragglers like myself into continuing with the book club, and just give them a might bit longer to pull together a library card or a few bucks to acquire the next book.

thanks for putting this together phil, I like the choices (i've only read "and then there was one" previously). i'll try to pick up the twain today..maybe have it already.

and for the claymation portrayal of the mysterious stranger

I'll try and see if I can get ahold of it. Maybe my parents have a copy. I don't have a library card here. Are you guys just buying the books?

X

There are used copies available for under 10 dollars.

I'm excited.
