Hello all,

We often have threads asking what book are you reading or requesting titles of interest to us to expand our ever growing database of literature on file mentally. I was wondering if perhaps there might be enough people here to start a book club. Each week we can chose a new genre so that it is spread out. I think peer review and a poll would work the best in choosing the selection. Or we could find another book club online and pirate their selection reducing the work of figuring out what to read.

what says you?

We tried this out in SO and it didn't take off too well. We ended up reading Brave New World but the discussion for it kind of flopped. I would love to see a book club on bluelight, but I'd probably suggest that instead of one book per week maybe one book every 2 weeks or per month or so.

There's a lot of people on BL who I know would like to participate that have busy schedules and might not be able to finish a book a week (depending on the length of course).

You took the words right out of my mouth. Considering the fact that I've been working on reading the same book for a good 4 months now, I just don't know if I'd have the time. :(

Definitely interested, just dunno if I can make time for it.....if it's set up though I would love to participate when I've got the time! :)

I agree that one a week is too hardcore....I think one a fortnight or even one book a month would be a better fit for this forum..

once a month sounds a lot better. even if someone read 25 pages a day they should be able to finish a book in a month. That really is the key to breaking it down for busy people. How many pages a night can i commit to? I doubt that even though we all are very busy people we couldnt devote 25 minutes a day to reading. perhaps at a lunch break or before bed. We to often concern ourselves with this daily rat race without taking time to do something that sustains us or enlightens us, or even at the very least utilizes other areas of our brain.

I think chapter by chapter or groups of four chapters depending on length might be a good way to go.

If we had a week to read a chapter then discuss it the next whilst reading the next chapter.

for me that pace is restrictive. But it depends on which book we chose. If it was Jungian analysis of archetypal changes throughout the ages than i would most certainly agree a chapter a week.

Its got to strike a balance that gets a decent number of people on board. It might be worth polling on that point.

I think approx a quarter of a book per week might work well. As you say it depends on the book's length and difficulty.

Sounds great to me, Id be hard pushed to get through one book in less than 3-4 weeks though. Once university is over Ill have more spare time..

I like the idea of going chapter by chapter and discussing the book that way.

I think if you want to go ahead and read past the chapter that we're currently on, no one will stop you but just to remember where the rest of the group is when discussing the book so there won't be any spoilers or anything.

I hope this takes off, I love reading and Bluelight and I know of a lot of other people here that feel the same way so it would be awesome to make this work! :)

Definitely no more than once a month. I'd probably have the time tbh, but I don't want to spend all my time only reading books for BL when I have a stack of books next to my bed that I'm hanging out to read.

Also, I don't like the idea of breaking the book down into weekly sections at all. That being said, maybe people could do that if they want to, and then the people who would rather just come in at the end of the month and discuss the book as a whole if that's what they'd prefer.

Any book suggestions?

Book discussions will be covered in another topic once we hammer out a system.

So i am hearing so far that everyone is in agreement that a book a month is a good amount.

Two systems have been suggested the chapter a week approach or sectional approach and the read a book in a month and discuss it approach.

based on these notions what are your opinions?

I am a fan of a broken down book method out of the two. I think it is easier to have someone arbitrarily tell you to have this done by this week instead of thinking you can read it at the last minute. Also when we break it down most likely it will work for peoples schedules allowing for a small amount of reading per week scheduled in.

lets put it to a vote.

sectional vs reading a book without sections.

what say ye?

As I said in my post, I'll probably only join in at the end of the month but if you break it down each week then people have the option of week by week or just at the end of the month, so I'm going to vote sections.

I would opt for quarters per week, otherwise what are we going to do, ban all discussion of the book until the month end?

I nominate Chariots of the Gods for the first book :D

sounds good though, theoretically i'll be able to buy books in the future

Most likely the books we decide to read will be readily abundent at the library. perhaps we should do an intro week where we tell what book we are going to read and go over the time we are going to be spending on it, thus allowing people to get the books they need?
