Yeah, so I'm a relative tyro as far as opiates are concerned, and I was wondering what one might do with some black tar heroin if, for some reason, one happened to acquire some? For the sake of argument, say about a 2 gram rock. How might one snort it? Or should it be shot? If so, what sort of preparation would it require? I've really no ideas other than freebasing...

I dont think snorting it would be a good idea. Smoking is an option but it's a waste fi you ask me.
IV or IM it. If you've never shot nything beofre find someone who has and get them to help you especially when your messing with something like H. You definately dont wanna overdoit as far as the dose goes.
Break off a small BB size ball and stick it on a spoon. Add about .75cc of water. Heat it with a lighter but not too much. Just get it warm. Stir it around till it dissolves. Throw a filter into the solution. Draw the solution up into the syringe thru the filter. Flick out any air bubbles. There you go.
My advice would be to shoot it in your muscle if you dont have an experienced, resposible IV user around.
Whatever you do, make sure there is at least one other person around whether he/she is experienced in shooting or not isnt important. As long as they can dial 911 they are qualified.

Ok, first of all, I would advise against IM-ing it, especially tar heroin. I certainly wouldn't want all the shit that's in tar floating around in my leg or where ever you decide to IM it, you'll run a very high risk of infection.
Snorting it is out of the question really, so you're basically left with smoking it and shooting (IV) it. So first check out this page it is one of the best I have come across as far as information for IV drug use. Here is another site that is a little more basic. After you check out the first one, read up on this one for some extra pointers.
Oh, here is the BL FAQ for injecting written by PhreeX a while back. This is a pretty good guide for step by step instructions for those new to injecting, I highly recommend you check it out as well. Once you've read up on all this you're bound to have some questions, so feel free to post them here and I'll help you out or one of the many other members with IV drug experience can help you too.
With a little patience and proper safety precautions you should have no problems at all. Just remember take the extra few seconds to be safe and clean about IV drug use, it will take you a long way!
Oh, as a side note, if you're really interested in snorting it, search for "tar heroin" in the Other Drugs Archive, there aren't too many posts that come up but one will tell you how to make it "snortable"...basically it involves taking a pill (of your choice), crushing it up, then adding the tar H to it...
 
I've IMed tar many times with no problems. If I were to get an infection from it, I;d prefer it to be localized to some muscle tissue on my arm or whatnot than sending the bacteria straight to my heart.
There's actually a really easy way to snort it and it's quite efficient. It certainly hits you quick. Prepare the tar like I described above. Dissolve it in some liquid. Now take a straw and snort the solution up into your nose. It tastes nasty but it works well.
 
That's just my opinion about NOT IM-ing it BoneCutter...do as you please though. I just can imagine if you IM something that has some kind of impurities in it and you shoot it into a muscle tissue, now it's just sitting there and you've got a whole muscle area infected. Anyways, here is a quote from fairnymph from this thread:

I thought I had more information somewhere regarding the dangers of IM-ing street drugs (granted there are issues with IV-ing too, don't think I am making IV use out to be 100% safe). I can't seem to find anymore info at the moment, but perhaps fairnymph can go a little more in depth with this, particularly why "IV is safe, suprisingly." Maybe her explanation will help me recall the infomation that I can't seem to find right now.

fairnymph does make a VERY good point.
My example: I totally missed my vein one time on the side of my hand while trying to shoot cocaine into it....I first of all shouldn't have been handling a needle at this point because i was already crazy fucked up.....but anyway the IMed coke ended up numbing my entire hand and part of my arm....when i woke up in the morning i literally could not move my thumb.
It hurt so badly I had to position my thumb towards the left sitting on my pointer finger in order to drive a car without crying in pain. I really thought my hand was going to have to be amputated. Now although it eventually did stop hurting so much, every now and then when i move that section of my hand i can still feel the pain in that section.
However, I do not people that have done the same thing and nothing like this happened. In fact, I did miss one other time with cocaine and this did not happen. The point is that you never know what you're getting from street drugs.....and some more advice, while you are IVing your drug, make sure you pull back every once in awhile while pushing the liquid in your veins to make sure you didnt slip out. You'll be thank-ful for quite a number of reasons.

My only two experiences with black tar heroin were smoking it and snorting it.
To smoke it it was put in a long glass pipe with maybe .25g in each load. It was heated with a pocket propane torch. Whether this was the proper was to do it or not I don't know, but I got heavily sedated - with the opiate dreams and nodding and all. The people I was with always did it this way.
The next time I did it, probably 5 years later, I snorted it which involved cooking it up like you were going to inject it and snorting that liquid. I simply took a syringe and squirted it up my nose as I inhaled. Be warned though this stuff burns like battery acid - the worst burn of anything I've put my nose near.
I got much better results - and longer results from smoking it however.
