GeG, do you play (in your mind) by the point system (i.e. you assign a number of points to each different kind of piece)? It's what I do, all else equal, when I'm playing someone for the first time.
 
^ nah, i never bother about points when it comes to chess. come to think of it, i can't think of anyone i know to use it either.

It's weird, I guess. When I first started playing people were beating the crap out of me without even trying, so I picked up some beginners guide to chess and it said:

Queen = 9
Rook = 5
Bishop = 3
Knight = 3
Pawn = 1

I always play every game like that, which is a weakness I guess, and once I get a single point ahead of someone my goal will be to trade pieces evenly until there is nothing left. the value of playing like this can be most clearly seen in the end game. But people who are strategically more thoughtful can easily take advantage of people like me
 
Id put a Bishop's value at prob 4 as I think they're a bit more valuable than a knight...Nnights are great in the beg but rather useless towards the end
 
lol not really. i just got frustrated in high school when everyone could beat me. so i read the first chapter of a beginners guide to chess and came back the next day and started beating a lot of people. I just have a few basic rules when I play, but no real strategy.

My rules are off the top of my head:
1. follow the point system
2. take control of the center of the board as soon as possible (if your opponent lets you)
3. castle as soon as possible (unless there are a few awesome opportunities that can't wait)
4. do not let your opponent directly make you move your king defensively early/midway into the game (or at all, if possible)
5. don't put the queen out there in the middle of the board early unless you are absolutely sure there is a point (because if there's not a point other than to make an empty threat then you will just be forced to move your queen right back - wasting precious moves - while your opponent is taking control of the center)
6. "knights on the rim are dim" (i.e. just don't put the horses on the perimeter unless you have to),
7. don't look for easy, gimicky victories when you're playing GeG - play the whole game deliberately, don't get excited

in chess, the pieces are assigned a numeric value. all it does is determine which pieces are more valuable than others. you don't need it to play chess if you know how the pieces move on the board. for instance, a queen is given a value of nine where as a pawn is given a value of one. these values are based on the way the pieces move on the board. the queen has a higher value than the pawn because she can move throughout the board with the least amount of restriction. so with that, i wouldn't put my queen in a position to be overtaken just so i could take my opponent's pawn. i guess it's easier for some to know the numeric value of their piece than to just look at it in terms of the way the pieces move.

some people like to trade pieces evenly throughout the game based on the point system, while others will be willing to sacrifice a piece of greater value if and when it suits their strategy. so while the point system is there, choosing to use it just depends on how you yourself play the game.
