I thought there would be a thread for this and couldn't find it.

Is there an increase in the risk for blood clots when weed (or DMT or Salvia) is used while under taking birth control compared to birth control itself?

I'm not sure if the CD staff will want to do anything different with this, but cannabis discussion belongs in CD and not BDD. Hopefully you can find what you're looking for :)

well, the smoke itself can't be good for you :P I have heard plenty of commericals saying "women who smoke have increased chances of....". Seems common sense... As to how often that happens, or if it occurs from cannabis, I am unsure. The past 3 girls I was with were on birth control and smoked weed, and they've had no problems.

I'm not sure if it's a problem or not but I know that it is strongly recommended that women not smoke (cigarettes) while on birth control because it vastly increases the risk of blood clots. It's enough of an issue that a 35 yr old smoker will not be prescribed birth control. I couldn't find any solid information on whether this also applied to smoking weed or not. As far as I know smoking a substance is not the culprit itself but the nicotine in the cigs actually increases the risk for blood clots.

I don't think it's "smoking" that does it, but nicotine. Nicotine has a rather messy pharmacological profile, and the smoke contains other active compounds, in addition to the usual toxic crap from burning plant matter.

It's the nicotine that increases of the risk of blood clots while taking hormonal contraceptives, HOWEVER, this risk still exists on its own even if you don't ingest nicotine... the risk is just slightly increased.

Smoking weed is no biggie when on BC. Even a planned parenthood lady came into my school and told us young cigarette smokers aren't even at vthat much of a risk.. The older women need to worry.

I have recently started taking the contraceptive pill for my periods and when the doctor asked if i smoke i said no because my mum was there, but i smoke socially and smoke weed, someone told me that even one cigarrete will give you a blood clot, it this true?

No, that's not true... Well I mean it could happen but that's rare. If your young enough your mom comes to your appointments then you don't have much to worry about. Age makes smoking more riskier and yes I heard this from a planned parenthood chick, I even had to volunteer there so I know all that jazz... There are many who smoke on BC it's not all that safe but it most likely won't kill you or what not.

I think it is smoking, not nicotine. My cousin had a stroke while smoking on the pill, I would advise against it, not worth the risk. ESP if u are over 35.
