Many young people attracted to more than one gender tend to binge drink because they feel stigmatised and socially excluded, a study by the University of Otago in Wellington has found.

Passing legislation for marriage equality - also known as same sex marriage - is suggested as a way to help alleviate the problem.

Binge drinking was higher among young people attracted to more than one gender than for other sexual minorities or for heterosexual young people, lead author, Frank Pega, from the university’s public health department and the Harvard School of Public Health, said.

He noted it was still a minority of those attracted to more than one gender who were binge drinking.

The study involved in-depth interviews this year with 32 people aged 18-25 in 11 focus groups in Auckland, Wellington, and Dunedin.

A significant factor leading to binge drinking was found to be wide-ranging social exclusion experienced by young people attracted to more than one gender, from heterosexual, lesbian and gay communities.

"Most study participants reported that they commonly experienced biphobia (an aversion toward bisexuality and bisexual people) and discrimination, and some had been verbally harassed and physically abused for their sexual attraction.

‘‘For many, these experiences resulted in a sense of being stigmatised, which caused daily stress and anxiety,” Pega said.

“While many participants were very resilient and responded positively, some participants binge drank to manage this stress.”

I can see that. In the straight world, a bi guy is still a fag, and in the gay community a bi guy is just "in transition" to being fully gay. Bi people are not taken seriously.

I'm gonna quote L2R from another thread because I think he's right and also because we suck each other off sometimes, usually just before having sex with our women.

everyone is bi. full straights are homophobic and straight gays are just heterophobes.

imho

I'm bisexual and I used to binge drink a lot on a daily basis at times. I don't do this now. I did not have to go to AA to stop.

The thing is, everyone binge drinks regardless of sexuality. Or does this mean all them binge drinkers are bisexual? :P bi people have it way easier then gay people that's for sure. So shouldn't more gays be binging?

This study was specifically about bi people, but I think you'll find other studies tend to show that substance abuse is higher among any non-heterosexual subset of the population.

I don't believe this - not exactly, anyway. My opinion is pretty close though. Let me explain.

I believe that everyone is somewhere on the scale between 100% heterosexual and 100% homosexual.
Nearly everyone falls in between the extremes, but there are people who - naturally - belong at one extreme or the other.

Of course, social reasons make most people push themselves toward one extreme or the other, so they can fit in a group and get a label that is respected in their society, and many of these people who change themselves to fit in are (or become) homophobic or heterophobic.

However, before all the social adjusting in order to fit, there are people who fit on all parts of the scale, including the extremes.
I think that all parts of the scale are equally populated, rather than there being a bell cure, for example.
This means most people are somewhere in the middle, but true, equal, bisexuals (equally attracted to men and women) should be just as common as 100% straights and 100% gays. Most people have a preference, but have some degree of attraction to the other sex as well.

Just my opinion, based on my experiences.

As far as the article goes, anyone who lacks social respect is probably more likely to use drugs to escape.
