Best/worst on screen accents

Christian Bale also has a great American accent in anything he does, but that could be considered cheating cos even though he was born in UK, he has been living in USA on and off since he was 17.

True...although in SOME very rare instances I catch him slipping! hehe

I think Nicole Kidman does a great american accent in To Die For :D

as much as i love angelina jolie, i can't stand when she does accents. 'original sin' and 'tomb raider' stand out as movies where her accent drove my crazy.

BAD:
Steve Martin as Clouseau
Kevin Costner in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

Seriously, dude, at least give it a shot.

GOOD:
Helena Bonham Carter in Fight Club.
Robin Wright in The Princess Bride.
Charlize Theron in The Devil's Advocate
Peter Sellers in anything
Johnny Depp in anything

Hmph. I'm not a fan of hers, but I thought her English accent in the Tomb Raiders was pretty damn good. :)

moonstruck is on tv right now reminding me of all the nasty brooklyn and new york accents people try to affect. while yes, it is a harsh dialect, really some take it too far and it just becomes painful.
and then there is the boston accent. the entire casts of thirteen days....eh?
i think matt damon can pull off the accent but how about his one in jersey girl, ick.

Good:
Marisa Tomei - My Cousin Vinny
Ralph Fiennes - Schindler's List
Benicio Del Toro - Usual Suspects

Bad:
Madonna - Whenever she tries to grasp the English language (ie. all the time!)
Renée Zellweger - Bridget Jones movies.
Richard Gere - The Jackal (Horrible Oirish accent)

Totally off topic

Helena Bonham Carter

I once saw her in some excellent film years ago about some poor crippled lass and a guy trying to build a plane out of random shite !! Great film have no idea what it was called.
ONE i ACTUALLY ENJOYED , REALISTIC SPRINGS TO MIND !

Terrible-Hugh Laurie and his attempt at an American accent. Especially in 'House', or 'Life With Judy Garland: Me & My Shadows' :|

I think Hugh's accent in House is great. It fits his gritty persona perfectly, he's always a little agitated.

^ i think he does quite a good job. it's just a bit odd seeing him in that role :)

And one that constantly impressed me was Rachel Griffiths in Six Feet Under. Vey natural sounding imo.
i agree - i wonder how many people just assume she's an american?

I for one always assumed Rachel Griffiths to be American. Doh! :)

Giovanni Ribisi in the Other Sister is about as good as it gets, though I'm not sure that counts as an accent? :D
HAHAHAHHAHA! I think the same thing every time I see her on the screen.

Best: Going with the same theme I thought Sean Penn did a great job in I Am Sam.
Worst: Jane Seymour as Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman... geezus.

spud in trainspotting... this ruined a great movie.
