A method for IV'ing Hydromorph Contin
SWIM had quite a bit of success IV'ing hydromorph contin. The bugger is of course the little beads. Here's how I do it. I get 60 18mg HM contin every month.
Now this is really a poor man's mortar and pestle (and will buy one when have the $$).
I take a 12mg and pour the beads into a large tablespoon. . To crush the beads I use the bottom end of a heavy ratchet, it is heavy and the bottom is round, smooth stainless steel (you can also use a screwdriver with a round bottom but the weight of the heavy ratchet helps grind better.
Crushing the beads is where the elbow grease is required, that's why I use a heavy tool. But you can clearly see the beads before you start and when done after crushing every bead (just grind, push it all to the center of the spoon and grind and keep going until you don't hear anymore crunching beads), you should have a mixture of the crushed beads and the powder and in the spoon you can basically see any uncrushed beads.
I then add a bit of water and crush again, this is to basically get the powder that is still stuck in the crushed beads. I myself heat the spoon to a quick boil to dissolve all the Hydromorph, although I know many say this is unhealthy. I have been banging OC's for years and that must be heated to get the oxycodone out and for sure some of the wx gets in, but when I heat the HMcontin the solution in the syringe is clearer then I ever get with OC's. If health was my no. 1 concern I wouldn't be Iv'ing crushed pills...the only totally clear solution I have ever gotten crushing pills are the 8mg dillies. anyhow, I tried not heating and maybe it was in my head but I didn't feel I was getting the full hit. I would like clarification on this part really....I have always had to heat dillies to get them to dissolve (even the generic, even though they don't go clear), I don't know why the dilaudid powder in the beads wouldn't also need to be heated to dissolve. Anyhow I heat it cause I have always had to heat hydromorphone to dissolve in the water unless someone tells me the dilaudid powder in the beads is for some reason water soluble without heat but not in any other dilaudid form I will heat my solution up. The key is making sure you have a good filter. Wet the cotton on your q-tip before you tear it off, rip of a good piece and roll very tightly.
Luckily, The needle exchange we have in Toronto gives out little cotton spun dental pellets (used for packing after dental surgery) which look like little cotton bowls, you put your needle in the whole in the middle and it fits right over yur needle tip - we can get them in different sizes).
Now here is a harm reduction tip USE A 25Guage VACUTAINER BLOOD COLLECTION SET if you can get your hands on them. I got clean for a while using methadone and then got off the meth no prob. I blew another disc in my neck and here I am at the pain clinic again. I am no longer able to poke myself anymore. I don't know why but my hands get shaky and I miss 90 % of the time).
I use butterfly IV sets that you may have seen used for taking blood. Instead of the old form of using a neeedle with a large plastic housing that they put the tubes in to take the blood once they've hit a vein, these little sets have a needle with a butterfly handle and about 6 inches of tubing. They take blood using these by poking the vein then you know your in cause blood starts coming down the tubing, then they simply put the tube by plugging the rubber tipped needle at the opposite end into the top of the tube and in goes your blood. Here's the secret ...the rubber tipped needle at the end can be screwed off and the tubing end has a lip that screws perfectly into any size syringe, obviously made to be able to take blood into a syringe instead of the vacuum tube. so you are not limited to 1cc and I can always hit my vein. this means I can use as much water as I want and any size syringe.
It also makes drawing your stuff up into the syringe easier..just hold the butterfly needle onto your cotton with one hand and draw into the syringe using my other hand or pulling on the plunger with my teeth.
If you can get your hands on thes vacutainer sets they are a godsend. I simply tie off, hit the vein, as blood slowly goes down the tubing take off the tourniquet I screw the syringe with my stuff on the the end and pull back so all the blood goes to the syring getting out any bubbles then push away and bob's your uncle. Using the butterfly IV sets means I never miss a vein. I have three sight that I rotate and it's brilliant. Luckily there is a very liberal needle place in toronto called 'the works' and as I have 'Parkinsons' and am too shaky to hit a vein they give me 8-10 a month, I get a few uses out of each one although I can make them last longer if I need to, but with a good supply I can be picky and not worry about a dulling needle.
Anyhow, the Hydromorph contin takes a bit more work but worth it to me, and if not for the vacutainer butterfly IV ssets I would be covered in bruises and track marks from missing my veins. before I could get a steady supply I would grab some from a walk in clinic if could find where they were or when going to hospital would ask the person taking my blood for a glass of water or something to puke in and grab some from her basket or grab some from a loccal blood lab when you get blood taken (most family docs in Canada now just fil in a requisition and you have to go to a lab I could also grab some there.
Happy days
