it's used in racing, though I have some recollection the n2o is mixed with something there that makes it unsuitable for inhaling. I think the only viable options are the whippits or if you know someone who works at a hospital or something...

Around here welding gas suppliers are the primary source of nitrous for parties with different locations supplying different grades. One or two locations are notorious for primarily supplying to raves and are run by old hippy-type guys. Of course, you need to know someone with a license to get it filled but there's no shortage of such people in the local scene.

As others have correctly pointed out, if you are asking this question then the best source is cream cartridges. The "best" source is that which is combined with oxygen and used for medical purposes, but this is obviously only available to those with the appropriate medical licensing. Food-grade cylinders are also available but are similarly very challenging to obtain.

Auto nitrous is typically mixed with sulfur dioxide to induce a choking cough in anyone attempting to inhale it.
