Best Song of All time

i've been saying pink floyd's "shine on you crazy diamond" for more years than i remember, but i really don't know. leonard cohen's "the story of isaac" has been a recent obssession of mine. i've adored dizzy gillespie's "manteca" particularly for years.

for pure and lasting musical quality, i'd have to go for something jazz or some classical shit if i really want to answer honestly.

For the past year or so, my favourite song's been Salt, by the apocalyptic folk group Kiss the Anus of a Black Cat, which happens to be my favourite band as well.
Beautiful shit.

i really like "don't follow" by alice in chains. my favorite song for sure, layne's vocals blow my brain

Yall gonna hate my first post...

Breaking my Bluelight virginity with a song that is not the best of all time...

I looked at it from a strictly personal perspective. The song didnt break down social barriers, nor is the lyrical content quality. But, no song in my iTunes list has been played as much as this song:

I Really Mean It by the Diplomats,

Its testament to my simple mentality... It makes goods sounds :\ In my opinion its the greatest beat produced...hehe

Hands down for me: "Venus in Furs" by The Velvet Underground - for multiple reasons. I heard it when I was 9 years old, on my dad's vinyl, and I was actually frightened by it. I hadn't heard it for a few years. The girl I lost my virginity to (a "babysitter" even though I was 14, my parents couldn't trust me to watch my brother) had it on a cassette tape along with all sorts of other great music like The Pixies and Cocteau Twins. She was of age, robbing the cradle. But that was fine by me. She did a little strip-tease to it and kept giggling. She was pretty "gothy" which made the lyrics SO fitting. It played while I experienced the (awkward) joys of sex for the first time. From bedazzling, haunting fright to first penetration.

Shiny leather in the dark
Tongue of thongs, the belt that does await you
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart
Severin, Severin, speak so slightly
Severin, down on your bended knee
Taste the whip, in love not given lightly
Taste the whip, now plead for me
I am tired, I am weary
I could sleep for a thousand years
A thousand dreams that would awake me
Different colors made of tears

my favorite song will always be 'heartbeats' by the knife

a perfect pop song and beautiful love song at the same time

Easily my first is a typical indie kinda answer: Naive Melody (This Must Be the Place) by the Talking Heads

Some others though: Complete Control by The Clash; I'm on Fire by Bruce Springsteen; and Mother of Earth by the Gun Club.

EDIT: John Lennon - Jealous Guy is a great tune. Have you heard Bryan Ferry's version?

For me, my top choice, though it is so hard to choose just one- is 'Strange Fruit' written by Abel Meeropol and sung by the very talented Billie Holiday.
This song was the first protest/political song-
It took a lot of bravery and a bit of a rebel spirit to take it on.....
It was made all the more powerful being sung by Billie b/c of her race, sex and her passion behind it.
At that time race and sex were an issue, I believe that this song helped to open many doors for so many musicians who came after Billie.......It changed the history of music.
I love the song, when sung by others as well- but Billie owned it.
So, that's my top choice.

That's a good song (although it is certainly not the first political protest song), but the Cassandra Wilson version gives me goosebumps.

Also, I don't have a favorite song - I really see no possible way of narrowing things down that far. Shit, I can't even pick a favorite album.

mos def-mathematics

As far as hip hop goes it has everything. It all starts with a great beat this one makes me tap my toe every time it comes on. Then the lyrics oh man the lyrics Mos Def manages the impossible being political without being overbearing. Dude tears it up addressing his points with style and clarity. To me this is hip hop in top form aggressive but thought provoking

Imagine - Lennon

Get Up, Stand Up - Marley
