I can get hold of a few different old sedating anti-histamines and was wondering out of the following :-

Doxylamine

Diphenhydramine

Hydroxyzine - This ia prescription only so I can't get muc, but can get enough.

Promethazine - The most expensive and gives me a hang over/makes me sleepy the next day.

Which is healthiest? I've read promethazine can cause blood/anemia problems and I find it very sedating (Hang over effect) the next day.

Which is best for sleep?

Which is best for anxiety? I know hydroxyzine (Other anti-histamine's probably were too) used to be prescribed for anxiety and occasionally I get anxious.

Which is best mixed with opioids (And possibly other sedatives)? I've tried all of them except doxylamine (It doesn't seem that popular on the UK market from what I've seen.

If you's can could you's put them say in 1 - 4, 1 being the best and 4 being the least.

Thank you advance!

Diphenhydramine is what I've always used for sleep, but it stops begin effective after awhile. Plus, if I take more than 75mg for sleep I end up getting mild "jolts" with it. Basically its that feeling you get when you're startled and half-asleep. That's why I had to stop using it as a sleep-aid, any time I was close to dozing off my body would jerk itself awake.

I say Benadryl. That's what I use. I use it for sleep, migraines, allergies, cooking, lawn work, putting my hubby to sleep ect....
Just migraines, allergies, and sleep. Lol!!

Hydroxyzine always has worked wonders if I need to get some sleep, problem being that I find it too sedating and sleep for too long. Diphenhydramine is a good middle ground and works great for a lot of things as Zoeylynn said. This is probably your best bet imo. Doxylamine never did much of anything for me personally, and I have never tried Promethazine. $0.02

diphenhydramine is what i used before i could get z-drugs or benzos.

although this is unrelated to the topic, i'd advise if you got diphenhydramine, that you don't try using it recreationally as is possible. the hallucinations are really negative and quite frightening for a lot of people who try it, which is why many don't try it again! i could see white spiders coming from under my radiator and scuttling towards me. i also had unpleasant auditory hallucinations. i could even see the spiders reflections in the mirror which was fucking horrible. i will never ever try using diphenhydramine recreationally again. it's the worst time i've ever had on any substance and it lasted for an awfully long time. i'm not saying you will have a bad trip but it seems that it causes them much, much more than most other drugs! :?:(

I have YEARS of experience experimenting with many of these substances, and have found hydroxyzine to be BY FAR the best for sleep and to potentate opiates. Promethazine would be next, but I never found promethazine to do anything for sleep if I just took it alone. Ironically my suboxone doctor (while I was using IV dope) would prescribe me hydroxyzine and promethazine for possible withdrawal symptoms while I was tapering slowly. She had no idea I was using and she was giving me drugs that made my dope go further. I would stop and take subs the week of my drug test, then use for 3 weeks. I am happy to say I detoxed off suboxone and got on vivitrol which has been a godsend, but that's getting off the topic. Hydroxyzine (Vistatril) is by far the best but any antihistamine helps.

Before going on mirtazapine I was taking diphen daily for years and I also had jolts or brain zaps during the day when I was trying to nap.

i prefer promethazine in a low to moderate dose (25-75mgs) for opioid potentiation and doxylamine for sleep. promethazine works better in the former regard for me than any other antihistamine i've tried so far. however, if i have one of my more nasty bouts of insomnia, neither mirtazapine or any antihistamine will put me to sleep. for some reason only GABAergics work in that case, and i've had the princely sum of 2 hours of sleep in the last 50 hours, in spite of popping copious amounts of the aforementioned chemicals in the past two days.
