best gallon size container to use when mixing naptha, mimosa, and naho

gallon milk jug(s)

dont over base the dh20 + naoh mix, it could theoretically melt the plastic milk jars. (use distilled water).

This would be an impressive achievement. I think product would be trashed before you came close damaging the plastic bottles.

^That or apple cider often comes in glass gallon jugs. Or, if you really want the best option buy a 4L pyrex beaker.

Milk jugs should be fine. They're insoluble in naphtha, and won't react with NaOH.

I know this first-hand: I've stored highly basic solutions in HDPE milk jugs for weeks and the jug remained completely unaffected.

I use 2000 ml borosilicate screw cap bottles. Theyre a bit expensive, but theyre safe and easy to handle. This is just for mixing though. I think a separation funnel is essential when it comes to extractions.

I didn't realize that so many milk jugs are HDPE. Yeah, that'll do it. I like the screw cap bottles for storage, but they have many applications.

If you have any concerns that a container would react with whatever chemicals you are putting in it, glass is usually the safest option.

actually, for this purpose HDPE #2 (plastic milk jug) is the BEST.

if you leave strongly basic (pH >10) solutions in contact with glass for an extended period of time, it can micro-etch and weaken the glass, making it prone to breakage later. and that's not fun.

Milk jugs are made of high-density polyethylene, so they won't melt from the NaOH or naphtha-- and that pop off cap is really convenient too as long as you're careful.
