One of my favourite drum sounds is Steve Moriss's on Joy Division's 'Unknown Pleasures'. He never really played anything beyond boom krak boom boom krak. Just a basic rock beat played with a lot of restraint and dynamics. He really new how to control JD.

That restraint (and the fact that the kit itself was mic'ed and eq'ed so well) produces a really fragile and hollow sound. It totally works in the sonic picture.

just because he's really solid, doesn't make it good.

ANY drummer should be able to play to a click track or metronome. It's doing all sorts of crazy patterns with the rest of your appendages that proves skill, I believe.
 
^Definitely. Which is why bringing unusal rythmns from other ethnicities is so fucking tough on drumset and why also why it makes blending styles so fucking cool.
 
you might want to talk to WOOD about some of these metal bands from south america like Sepultura and whatnot. He def. knows alot more about other bands similiar to them, but they use alot of tribal influences in their rhythms.

I'm not sure how system of a down fits into that list...

pretty generic nu metal drumming to me... just my opinion though.
 
John Bonham and Dave Grohl come to mind as my favorite rock drummers.

I think everyone in that band does their thing pretty well, but yeah John Dolmayan (drummer) doesn't do anything out of the ordinary. The guitarist in System is the most talented member, I'd say. Especially since he has taken over a major part of the vocals and lyric writing now as well.
 
hey who is Morbid Angel's drummer on the album Covenant (or did they always have the same drummer...i have it recorded on a blank cassette tape)? Wow the start and stop triplets on "Pain Divine" are incredible, i never really even listened to it. In fact i usually skip this track cuz i dont like the guitar composition. But in any event wow the drums are incredible, they start and stop so fast you need a very well trained ear to catch it, the ability to just disregard inertia like that requires some massive skills.
 
Sound Tribe Sector 9's drummer kicks ASS. Saw them for the first time last night, he was damn good.
 
i listened to them once when i was coming down from a candy flip and smoking a ton of weed. i was impressed.
 
Yea, the whole show I was looking for someone who'd trade me acid or a roll for some bud, and I was kicking myself for not bringing mushrooms. Definately the type of music to listen to under the influence. Great fucking light setup too.

Well i was just reading through some threads and there was a lot of talk about drummers. so........

Who is your favorite drummer? and please explain why.....

I really like Neil Peart but my all time fav is Billy Cobham, because he is so technically great, so fast and so solid. He has come up with so much unique material, it's just amazing.
