Opinions on Social Anxiety

So for the past few weeks I've been put on a Buspar and Vistaril combo to help out with mild social anxiety, which can make me experience panic attacks in heavily crowded or overly stressful situations. This combo doesn't work, as the buspar has really only helped with overall anxiety of stress, but has made me oddly very jumpy and has little to no effects on my panic attacks in situations. My question to you all, what benzo do you find most helpful in treatment? I'd rather be put on something more long lasting like valium, but at this point i'll take anything.

ive found benzos most helpful but you have to consider the negative affects of benzo dependence. you say you only have mild social anxiety. i would look for non drug treatments.

Buspar has been shown to have anti-depressant and anti-anxiety effects when paired with an anti-depressant or anxiolytic, though is rarely used by itself to treat anxiety. I have found benzodiazepines the most effective for dealing with panic disorder, but I did give both SSRIs/buspar and tricyclic/buspar combinations a try to some degree of success. If you don't find your treatment satisfactory, I would recommend taking the possibility of addiction of benzos into account (as well as their side effect profile) before taking them. I'm not going to say that klonopin in any way ruined my life... since it definitely saved me from a rough time, but it has made this past year difficult in a different way (tapering off and learning to cope with my anxiety).
The longer lasting benzos that I tried (klonopin and valium) worked better for me than the shorter ones (like ativan and xanax), since I would have relatively nasty come-up anxiety as they left my bloodstream. there's no instant, easy, maintainable answer to anxiety so far as I've found, but there are definitely options that will make your day to day life much easier. good luck!

Valium works very well for my general anxiety and social anxiety. 5mg at lunch and 5mg at dinner does me well. As other posters have said, this will cause problems later when I want to stop the benzos. Most doctors suggest SSRIs for this type of anxiety.

buspar actually made me more anxious, but it looks like your Dr. is trying to stay with benzos. IDK smoke pot before you have to be around people, just remember the eye drops :D

For social anxiety, most doctors like an SSRI sometimes combined with buspar. If you are having panic attacks you should go to a psychiatrist and get put on either Xanax (if panic attacks are rare) or Klonopin (if they happen everyday) along with and SSRI. You probably won't get Valium, as Klonopin is the drug of choice for panic attacks/panic disorder. Your benzo use should only be for a short time (a month) as the most effective long term solution for social anxiety and panic attacks is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and perhaps Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy, which you will need to find a competent psychologist for.

It's hardly shocking that the current combo you're on isn't working. The two drugs you're on now are junk. Social anxiety and Panic Disorder are shitty conditions. Get the help you need. Trust me, you will feel much better. Good luck.

>>IDK smoke pot before you have to be around people>>

This is generally bad advice, as pot is more often anxiogenic than anxiolytic for many people.
...
The truth is, for many people, only benzos really work, and a daily regimen of benzo use is not going to be sustainable in the long term due to tolerance issues.

Cognitive behavioral therapy based on exposure therapy works very well...but it will be more work (and unpleasant work) for you.

That was my recommedation for illict drugs I guess...pot brings down my anxiety level so much I think it would be impossible to have a panic attack.

But you are right. Therapy can be helpful with some kinda of cognitive restructuring.

True, I forgot that they use SSRIs, Zoloft is the usual choice.

Yeah, it's supposedly the best SSRI for anxiety, according to the many (too many) psychiatrists I've talked to. I haven't had a problem with it except for headaches.

Edit: Oh, and the inability or difficulty of having sex that most SSRIs cause.

in my experience, pot changes the way it affects you over time more so than any other drug. it went from relaxing me and making me feel at peace with myself to making have a full blown panic attack every time i used it. that's why i would never recommend marijuana for anxiety.

now maybe using marijuana once a week or something as a tool for introspection, it could help with anxiety. but actually taking it on a daily bases to treat anxiety sounds like a recipe for disaster.

I find Xanax to work wonders. I makes me feel more alive, like I can deal with the world but does not make me feel over medicated which is good when in the real world.

I would not take to often though, only as needed as it can be very addictive and dangerous to stop suddenly once you become addicted to it.

Drug use, prescribed or not, is just irresponsible and childish in the long run.
Most times anxiety has a cause, hidden and more hidden, and after solving the cause, anxiety starts to melt like snow in the spring sun.

I think which Benzo works for which person is obviously a case by case basis.

I have never been prescripted a benzo. But as far as taking (Xanax,Ativan,Klonopin,Valium) on a recreational basis, I would take 20-40mg valium and be very stress free. I wish I could get a doc to write me a script here.

Ativan is too weak , and klonopin and xanax are too potent. And I know I would abuse them fuck out of them if I had access to a legit script.

^^
agreed. drug use causes and treats anxiety problems in different situations but the only true way to get over it is to clear your mind and try to think rationally about why you are feeling the way you do.

Benzodiazepines and barbiturates are probably the best thing you'll get for severe SAD. It's very dangerous to drink on them though, especially barb's.

But the doc will most likely start you with SSRI's, and teach you some relaxation techniques. He might also give you something completely useless like buspirone.

As Tsukasa stated, you are likely to get an SSRI. My doc gave me Lexapro. I've been on it a week and I think I'm starting to feel the effects. I really feel like it's going to be a good thing for me, you might want to give it a try.

The first couple of days were hard - I actually felt more depressed, anxious, and dizzy than usual. But it seems like it is going to be worth it in the long run.

^ Ditto what bow-viper says. A lot of people on here bag SSRIs because of their bad experiences with them, but I say give it a shot for yourself. I was prescribed Zoloft for clinical depression and social anxiety, was on it for about 8 months and then tapered off.

After coming out the other end, I feel fantastic! Just make sure that whatever your doc gives you, let him know if it's working or not.

Therapy also does wonders.

Good luck! :)
