So, my doctor has perscribed me amitriptylene for anxiety/depression. I feel like this is not strong enough, nor does it kick in fast enough. 2-4 weeks is much too long. Should i stick with ssri's for now? I tried this same stuff in the past and it didnt do squat, but i only did it for 5 weeks. If you think I should go for a benzo, how do i ask? I'm only 17 and i do have a history with drugs, might be a bit suspicious. I am a bit scared of the addiction potential of benzos since I have an addictive personality. I know that if i do end up getting benzos i will end up using it recreationally eventually when i run out of other drugs. Also, how do both benzos and ssris effect the heart? I have a moderatley bad heart condition.

This was scrambled together on a phone and i do apoligize for that. When I can get on my computer I promise I will be a bit more fluent in my writing :)

We can't tell you how to ask for drugs.

Give the SSRIs a second chance and stay away from benzos. You should only use benzos if anxiety and/or panic attacks are really preventing you from doing every-day things.

Well, I am currently failing 7/8 of my classes due to anxiety. I can't fall asleep until well past 2am because I am up worrying about shit. Which is why ideally, I would like to give the ssri's a chance but with a benzo as needed. I'm worried I may fail the semester if I cant stay in school, I NEED my ssri's to work now. Which is why I ask how I would go about asking. I'm not trying to con these pills, I just feel that I need them. Being a 17 year old male who has abused meds in the past, it is hard for my doc to take me seriously. I am not asking "how do I get drugs?" but rather "how can I take control of my medical/emotional/psycological situation?" I have been self medicating with weed and opiates until now, Which is why I so desperatley need these to work. I know it sounds bad because, hey, its a benzo. But the other alternatives to benzos seem to have mixed results. I need something fast and quick to help me out of this rut. Then I belive a steady ssri will help me until i can overcome my true issues.

You're 17. Start dropping some of your classes before you go to pharmaceuticals. Different people learn at different speeds, and quite often anxiety is a symptom of overextension. Your mental health should take priority over everything else! Do[n't go picking up a benzodiazepine habit because it will only bite you in the ass in future.

"Check yourself before you wreck yourself." Don't rush things, you have a lot of life ahead of you.

I suggest you use neither benzos nor SSRIs. You don't need them (or dependence on them) at that age.

Drug dependence (especially benzo) tends to make anxiety much worse in the long term. If youre 17 what are you going to do about the rest of your life? Read up benzo withdrawal.

SSRI's will be much better for the relief of anxiety. Make sure you are on a pure SSRI such s Zoloft or Prozc, and avoid the SNRI's and atypical SSRI's, tri-cyclic, etc....

Benzos will make your anxiety and depression worse in the larger scheme of things.

When I was 15 and buggin' out, I looked to pharmaceuticals to qualm my agitation. I got scripted Xanax at age15 and it changed my life forever.

For the WORSE.

Do NOT make the same mistake I did. I am hopelessly addicted (physiologically and psychologically) to my anti-aniety meds, i.e. Lyrica 150mg TID, Xanax ER 2mg BID and temazepam at night, and I am so miserable. I am attempting to rid my body of the benzos by attempting to take a modest dose (0.25mg)of Risperdal. It is an atypical antipsychotic med that has helped both my sister and mother recover from GAD c/w Panic Disorder.

I'm a little out of my element right now and am fading TBH. BUT, don't pollute your body and mind with the
"quick-fix" band-aid solution, i.e. benzodiazepines. You posted man, many things that would suggest that staying away from them would be in your best. You probably posted those aspects of yourself for a reason. So listen to yourself and don't make a gad situation harder than it has to be. This, too, shall pass and you'll emerge as a stronger person for it.

I generally agree with this piece of advice you gave to the OP; I am confused though when you mention staying away from "atypical SSRI's"... what do you mean by that? Do you, in fact, actually mean "second generation" (atypical) antipsychotic medications like Geodon, Abilify, Risperdal, etc?

as an aside for the OP, I DEFINITELY agree with muvolution regarding avoiding things like the TCA's, MAOI's and those nasty, *nasty* SNRI's (Wellbutrin induced unofficial schizoaffective symptoms in me! I became my own Doppelganger )

I don't understand the above post at all. TCA's - amitryptiline in particular - are still regarded as the 'gold standard' for long term anxiety relief by many, if not most psychiatrists.

Benzos - in particular Xanax (alprazolam) would be regarded as most effective for the short-term management of anxiety. They are also legitimately used long-term on a PRN basis - this means they're not taken regularly but, say, once a week/fortnight/month.

Benzos are meant to be prescribed to people in the OP's situation. He said he's not keeping up with work, not sleeping etc. He would absolutely benefit, in my view, from a small amount of benzos for use over a short period of time. You need to think about what sort of a person your doctor is, and about whether honesty or modified truth would best serve you.

Starting out being prescribed Benzodiazepines is NOT the answer. I started on being prescribed Lorazepam Sublingual at Age 17, and boy oh boy what a mistake that is. I am now paying for it 8 years later, at age 25 still suffering severe physical withdrawal symptoms from benzo's. I've been off them just over a month now, and still in rough shape. My doctor never warned me about the physical dependency with Benzodiazepines. I was also stupid myself and was ordering Benzo's online and also popping them all the time.

But there are much better ways to deal with anxiety, and if you are going to go the pharmaceutical route, than I would try something non-addictive like Atarax (Hydroxyzine) - its an antihistamine, but works quite well for mild-moderate anxiety relief and is non habit forming.

If Atarax doesn't work out for you, you can always give Lyrica (Pregabalin) a shot, but I would give SSRI's a go at it first. I would go with either something like Paxil, or if that doesn't work out for you I would try an SNRI like Effexor (Venlafaxine). I am not sure why other people are telling you to stay away from SNRI's, as they are very beneficial for a lot of people, and lots of the time work better than SSRI's.

Good luck.

Benzos at 17 sets you on dangerous path. Benzos are something that are really supposed to be used for relief of acute anxiety. That means panic attacks, or exposure to short-term heavy anxiety situations.

And you say, "when I run out of other drugs." If you're doing other drugs recreationally you should be careful because they'll often make anxiety/depression more difficult to deal with.

SSRIs are a much better choice. But as others have said, you should probably avoid both SSRIs and benzos at your age. You need to deal with the life situations that are provoking the anxiety and depression you feel. Good luck. And please be cautious in your use of psych drugs.

Wellbutrin is Strictly a NDRI and has little to no effect on serotonin.

When I was 17, I took no advice from older/wiser people considering e.g. my fixation with benzos. I hit my head against the wall with benzos - and finally ended up on a treatment containing clozapine (!) and citalopram. Now my anxiety is manageable, but I still regret not taking a hold on the non-benzodiazepine way - it would've saved me from a lot of trouble...

I still have problems like: overthinking, but I can live with it.

My words of concern lay with the multiple statements the OP made about having had substance abuse issues with prescription drugs in the past and knowing that eventually he would end up abusing the benzodiazepines if he were prescribed them. Benzos on a 2-4 week course of treatment or utilized as PRN's are definitely useful, and it certainly sounds as though his situation is dire to the point where an acute form of intervention would be warranted. Given his admission of likely intent to abuse the medication, though, I can't suggest that he give them a shot without trying other routes (pharmaceutical and otherwise) first. Others' recommendations of GABAergic AED's like Lyrica (I would recommend trying Neurontin, first) or Atarax/Vistaril (anxiolytic antihistamine) make much more sense, especially if the anxiety is pervasive and likely to be long-term. It sounds as though this is the case, because the anxiety has wrought his life for long enough to cause extensive damage - we aren't talking about panic attacks that occur once or twice bi-weekly that prevent him from doing his homework that evening.

In any event, the underlying cause of the anxiety should be ascertained and addressed, above all. That process is likely to take time and should involve professional assistance, but in the meantime the OP could be helped immensely by some sort of anxiolytic intervention. I still believe benzodiazepines are not the answer in this particular case.

I want to give credit to Kipo for at least having the balls to ask for honest advice here, even if that meant admitting that he would most likely abuse benzo's if he were scripted them. Kipo, that kind of honesty is difficult to muster - especially when the benzo lure is right there and seems so appealing. As a member of this community with anxiety issues and who began benzo therapy close to your age, who now regrets that decision so thoroughly, I'm happy to offer you my suggestions - but I wouldn't be able to give you the best advice if I hadn't known you had a history of drug dependence. I really think you ought to do yourself a tremendous favor and stay away from drugs that have a horrible dependence liability and withdrawal symptoms that can not only be deadly, but that can last for years. I spent twelve months using diazepam with a doctor's help tapering down from over 5mg of Xanax/day, which is where years of using the medications got me, and ended up still having seizures when I got down to 5mg of diazepam daily. I had to quit the taper, and am still on the damn medication to this day - wondering seriously if I'll ever get to live life benzo-free.

Anyway, I can only speak for myself. I can only offer you what I believe to be the best advice. But damn if I do believe it, and none of our advice can substitute for that of a licensed doctor.

Good luck to you,

I suppose now that I am on my computer I should clarify my situation a bit more?

Okay, for years I have faked "sick" from school. It would go on for weeks at a time since 7th grade. I never really had a reason to stay home, I am exeptionally healthy (even with all I put my body through) and I will rarely get 'truly' sick. The last time I would have really needed to stay home was back in 4th grade. I am 17 and a senior now, and because of past mishaps, I have a full schedule in school. I don't even get a lunch. I at one time was addicted to opiates and alcohol, but now I will only smoke weed/jwh on occasion with a few binges here and there. I had found that this helped my depression and anxiety. I often (and still do) would simply not go to school and wouldnt fall asleep until 2am on most nights. After staying home from school last friday (and having smoked all day long), my parents had a talk with me. My mom asked me "are you depressed?"

Well shit, I had thought about it. I have been faking sick for years now. I stayed home all day for days smoking to forget the situation I was in. I said "Yes" and that is when I knew that I had finally told my parens about how I was feeling. After thinking about this for years, I had finally made the jump (I am a very secluded person face to face). We went to the doctor that saturday and I got perscribed amitryptiline. Remembering my experiences with it in the past, it hadn't helped me at all but I was willing to give it a try. After going home and doing research to better understand my options. I came across benzos, I knew very little about them. But I quickly learned all about the addiction, and how well they worked.

Ideally, I would like an SSRI and a benzo as needed for short term relief. But, I am scared of the addiction potential. I have abused benedryl, cough syrup, even valerian root, just so that I could get high in desperate times. I even tried to get high off of amitryptiline when I had first gotten it. I am worried about doing the same with benzos. But at the same time, I feel like I need them to overcome my anxiety and depression so that I can sleep/get to school.

I am currently trying to limit my usage of other drugs, but until I find something that works for me, I think it will be difficult. Currently, I am only smoking a little bit of weed (enough to feel the threshold effects) so that I can calm down when I am really stressed. The problem with doing that (besides it possibly potentiating my anxiety) is that I do live in my parents house, and I do need to be clean to find a job. While I could smoke Jwh, its effects are un researched and it worries me to smoke it in excess.

Edit: I suppose I should reflect on what all of you have said. Right now, I feel very overwhelmed with information. Like I said, I am pretty new to this sort of medication, or even being open about my anxiety. If you guys would elaborate more on these medications, that would be great. As of now, I am very scared of the addiction potential. I think that my personality and benzo's would not mix well. On the other hand, it could be the thing to get me out of this mess for the time being. While I don't want to rely on drugs to get me out of this (It's funny because I have been self medicating for years) I feel its essential to get out of it so that I dont fall in deeper.

It's kind of hard for me to take you guys seriously when you say stuff like "I don't think you need these drugs, you are too young" because, shit, I am a teenager. I do understand were you are coming from though, when I look back at my early teen days I think "how young" when really, it wasnt that long ago. It's hard to look at this without my filter on, so I do apoligize for that.

It seems like getting perscribed benzo's could either be a life saver or a life ender for me at this point.

Basically SSRIs are for long term issues, Paroxetine being particularly good, and you can also add Buspirone that acts on anxiety but is noy as effective or addictive as Benzos. Benzos are better for short term flare ups of anxiety, though they may help to take a low dose for a couple of weeks as the SSRI kicks in

This reminds me. If I am taking a benzo only for the short term on top of an SSRI, woud it be daily or as needed? Or does it depend on my doctor? I don't want to get too dependent on the benzos right off the bat.
