how long does it take to become physically dependant on benzos? I'm quitting smoking and have a script for 1mg kpins. I'm thinking about taking .5mg every day for a month (this will also help to train my mind to be less anxious). Will I be fine to just stop after that? I expect a mild rebound anxiety but I'm talking WD's.

I would say you're right; I would only expect some rebound anxiety after .5mg/day for 30 days.

I think expecting taking benzos to 'train your mind to be less anxious' is kind of a pipe dream though. Its like saying someone is going to take opioids to train their body to be in less pain - it just doesn't work like that.

Benzos can be useful to calm anxiety while people find other methods to cope with or manage their anxiety but they don't just make it magically disappear... if anything, physiologically they make it worse over time and psychologically you become more dependent on the external anxiolytics.

Taking benzodiazepines to kick a nicotine habit is like taking morphine to kick an alcohol habit - overkill and substitution. I suppose that really it will depend on your history but I know that if I, even several years ago, has taken a benzo every day for a whole month I would either not quit or suffer so hard coming off it that the purpose of the whole ordeal amounts to nothing.

Why don't you buy some snus from Sweden or Norway and have 1-3 of those a day? Not that I really even think that is necessary to be honest.

You should be fine, I remember when I first started taking klonopin. You can skip days and feel fine and take it a few times a week.

I would only take it when you need it though. Example if your just sitting around the house I wouldn't take it. Unless your using it for sleep also. I've noticed just taking benzo's for 7 days can give rebound anxiety. A month is fine at those doses. And cane is right, benzo's just cover up the problem for the time being. As soon as you stop taking them that problem your trying to avoid is going to come straight back at full force.

It's different for everybody. But you will likely develop a mild tolerance after a month (meaning you need more to get the same effect) and some dependence after about 3 months of a moderate dose. But it's not that difficult to stop after that amount of time.

It will NOT train your mind to be less anxious. If anything, your mind will become less able to relieve anxiety without chemical assistance. You train yourself to get better at something by exposing yourself to it at increasingly higher intensities.

Rebound anxiety IS a withdrawal symptom. But after a month it won't be very bad.

exactly what afterglow said. rather than training your mind to be less anxious, you will be training it to be more anxious without benzos.

Yeah but the problem i'm trying to cover up will go away on its own (nicotine widthdrawl - I get really bad ones). It's not the urge to smoke, its the physical nicotine WD I'm running from.

[EDIT] And benzos completely get rid of nicotine WD for me

I'm also concerned about this. It is feasible to "chip" on kpin for a week, or a little less?

To be honest, kpin tolerance freaks me out more than getting involved with xanax, probably because I go through the xanax more quickly and so I don't have to worry about tolerance and withdrawal if I have no pills left.

I used to take Xanax for maybe a month a few years ago ~1-2mg day and stopped literally without issue.

I am just starting a tentative benzo usage, but don't know if it's worth it.

take it from someone with a 10mg clonazepam/day addiction on a taper dropping .5mg/month, and being down to his last 1mg month..next month i get .5mg/day and this is torture.
DO not get addicted to benzos IF you can help it %)

They don't get rid of them, they just make them unnoticeable because you're on another POWERFUL drug.

Cigarettes agonize Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors (nAChRs) while benzos agonize GABAa receptors so pharmacologically speaking, benzos will not stop the abstinence syndrome quitting smoking produces.

^it takes two to fuck (up).

Perhaps his doctor did prescribe them for nicotine withdrawal but that was never explicitly stated and I'm skeptical that any doctor would be willing to do that unless their completely without scruples.

i'm going to take you guys advice and not do this - i'm just going to use the patch like last time. I've been taking about a mg every other day or so for like two weeks and i'm worried about the halflife. I didn't take any yesterday, but I've got an oral presentation tonight so that'll be my last time.

And about my doctor, no, I didn't get prescribed this, my fiance gets it prescribed 30 1mg's and doesn't need em.

So, Ive been prescribed 5mg valuim in the past, and found if I took 2 or 3 and sat and watched movies they were nearly as enjoyable as doing it stoned... this time however, the doc only gave me 2mg, which I have found o be pretty useless - i.e I have to take 5 to 10 of them to get any effect.

I'm now wondering if I can smoke them as one would oxycontins to get a better effect? Any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks

p.s. Sorry to crash your thread with this question, but I couldn't figure out how to create my own thread.

At least you know your not taking any risks now, and that should make you feel better. I'm almost 14 months in benzo withdrawals right now. I wake up 7-8 times a night, lucky to get 6 hours, I have twitches and sweats, fatigue, and anxiety that I neve had before. I only took benzos (asst. mix of kpin, valium, ativan and xanax, low doses too) for about 4 months and got fucked over really bad.
