Benzo script?

What kind of situations are benzos usually perscribed for, and how commonly?
I've been taking an SSRI for a few months, and it seems to make anxiety stand out more, in a way. It's the opposite of what I would've guessed, since SSRI's are sometimes used to treat anxiety. The increased anxiety can be rather unpleasent, but doesn't cause any serious problems in my life. Is this the type of situation that would warrant a benzo script, or would it need to be something more serious?

Possibly. Your doctor could just switch you to a different SSRI/antidepressant. If the SSRI you are currently on is working exceptionally well other than the anxiety, then he could presrcibe you a benzo. It really depends somewhat on the doctor.
Tell your doctor that you are having some anxiety from the SSRI, and see what sort of options he offers you...ask him about non-SSRI anxiety medications and if you can supplement your current SSRI with another drug that will calm the anxiety.
Oh and benzos are fairly commonly prescribed, usually for anxiety, bipolar, sleeping disorders etc.
