( i started a thread just minutes ago, sorry for starting 2 threads, but this subject is very important for me and i want to discuss it separately ).

Daily use of benzodiazepines causes me to lay awake at night ( the opposite of taking the medicine occasionally which helps me with the sleep ). What can i do?
I don't want to stop taking it because of this, but what are my alternatives really?

It's happens over and over again. When i have eaten the medication for some days or a few weeks the trouble starts. Right now i practically been awake 3 nights ( ofcourse i have sleeping without really knowing it, but it seems like i am awake all night long ).

The only thing i can do right now is to reduce the doses and that will make me feel worse. I have serious mental issues, but one alternative is to talk to my doctor about neuroleptics ( but i don't have those kind of problems in which they help it seems and neuroleptics mostly makes me sleepy or drowsy ).

Stop taking benzodiazepines, switch your benzodiazepine to a more effective sedative, or combine e.g. dioxylamine into your sedative cocktail.

Benzos do have a "rebound effect" like this, it's a normal thing.

This maybe?

I don't think i understand english that good, sorry:) He said "a more effective sedative". Or do you mean that "dioxylamine" is a sedative?

I don't know though, i seem to respond perfectly normally to both Valium and Klonopin. It's just about the sleep, and i have gone through all other possibilities to think of, and it happens every time after i have been been eating benzo daily for a while.

He was saying to add something...

benzo+unisom/other sedative=sleep lol

If you want something that will probably knock you ass out consider seroquil...I took 300mg of that once not knowing exactly what it did coming down off of a roll...I was out for like 16 hours...ROAD IN THE BACKSEAT OF MY CAR TO DALLAS 2 HOURS AWAY TO GET MORE TABS WHILE PASSED OUT lol.

Ok, thanks. One strange thing about the rebound effect though. I haven't any trouble sleeping when getting off the pills, it's when i use them daily the insomnia problems arises.

I have a hard time to think about something that will help me like benzo will do. If i tell my doctor about this, he perhaps takes me off the medication and what will he/ i do then? Perhaps Xanax i think, but it will not help like Klonopin does. Maybe Xanax+something sedative like you suggested? Lorazepam i may try, but i guess it's a little kind Valium and Klonopin? But if it would cure insomnia it would be great!

Seroquel is a neuroleptic from what i have understood. It will be my last life line, but it certainly isn't any first option. Neuroleptics never have helped me really, just makes me drowsy and tired.

so are you having problems because you can't relax to go to bed? or are you having problems because you're not tired? sedatives=relax aka benzo, hypnotic=induce sleep aka barbituate.

I'm tired, not restless. I lay in bed all night, but i just can't manage to fall asleep. Maybe my mind isn't that tired after all?
You know, i feel less restlessnes and have less thoughts when i'm on benzo, but still can't fall asleep ( that's the only problem ).

So maybe some sleeping pill after all, but i don't know what the doctor will say, because i read that insomnia on benzo are listed as a serious side effect.

Well...ya...you can't live without sleep...It is a very important part of life lol...

Trust me, I learned the hard way...bring it up.

most benzos disrupt REM sleep. some alternatives that don't affect REM are lyrica, temazepam, doxylamine...

Just one thing more. The feeling is more or less the feeling you have on opiates. Just laying completely relaxed, but you never really sleep. That's the best way i could put it.

Yes, i have been thinking of Lyrica myself. Temezepam i will also check.

Yes, ofcourse it disturbs REM sleep, but my problem is to falling asleep at all.

you shouldn't have too much switching over to lyrica completely as pregabalin is often used for opiate and benzo withdrawal, but if you desire to continue taking your benzos you will find you will need less than you needed before.

I think sekio typoed, he meant doxylamine. It's a sedative antihistamine. It will probably do you a lot more good than just your benzodiazepine alone. You could also try switching to something like temazepam, although I think adding doxylamine will do the trick. If that isn't quite doing it, add melatonin.

I slept tonight! I didn't take any Klonopin yesterday and i took a pretty large dose Xanax before bedtime. I took a few hours to get to sleep, but when i did, i slept 8 hours in a row.

I must ask a doctor about this problem. I don't entirely trust my own. Maybe some Internet doctor, if there is some good boards out there where medically educated people hang around ( i don't doubt your knowledge though ). I have tried also at the social anxiety board, let's see what if i can find what is causing this.

I have a guess, but maybe it's no good. This rebound effect sekio is talkig about, maybe it is like he says. In some weeks using Benzo daily, maybe the body needs larger dosage to get to sleep? If that's the case, sleeping pills at bedtime would do the trick. It would be a natural thing if it is like that. Do you think i might be on the right track with this analysis?
