Basically I'm a raging alcoholic. Ethanol is by far my drug of choice, in addition to the anixolytic relief there's something about the oblivion and devil may care attitude about alcohol that really fascinates me. I've been reliatvely functionally drinking between 10 -25 drinks a day but its been getting out of control. While I don't view benzos as a long term solution to my alcoholism i feel like I need some sort of gabaergic drug to combat my anxiety while i quite drinking. I've been taking upwards of 4 mg of xanax with very little effect. I''m aware that benzos are notorious for not letting the user realize they're high until they've blacked out and make terrible social faux pas. However after 4 mg im quite fucntional. If anything i fell more energetic which is conducive towards taking care daily activities. my question is whether my past heavy drinking and what that's done to my gaba receptore has casued and unsually high tolerance for benzos?

It may have hammered your GABA-A Receptor pretty hard, and there is somewhat of a cross tolerance between Alcohol and Benzo's but not completely. I've seen hardcore drinkers 20 years + of heavy drinking, and then when they didn't have booze or wanted to dry out for awhile they would take 10mg of Diazepam (Valium) and be just out like a light.
I believe this is because Benzo's also act upon the BZP Receptor site as well as other pharmakinetic action on other GABA-A subunits.

^ Yes, I know. I never meant you. I just said I know some people who have been heavy drinkers for 20 years +. Yet when they end up taking a small amount of Diazepam to help dry out for liquor, they get extremely fucked up.
