Benadryl - 500mg - Stupid, but funny experience nonetheless

Hello! I read around and heard that Benadryl was somewhat odd in high doses (veering towards the unpleasant side from what I've heard). I wanted to try it for myself, so I went and bought a package of generic antihistamine relief pills and took a sheet and a half, whereabouts, totaling to 500mg, which I figured would be enough to experience the full spectrum of effects listed in various places.

To explain a bit beforehand, and to elaborate on some points that will come up later in this trip report, I currently have just graduated and am moving onto college, therefore I still live with my parents. :) This will be important in a little bit.

It honestly was somewhat uncomfortable, but an experience I can sit back and laugh at, however one that I would not want to repeat. I'll get to that in a bit.
To start off, I've done benadryl a couple times before, but only to dip my toes in the water, as I'm putting a mind-altering chemical into my body. The first few times were somewhat similar to being drunk, whilst seeing spots flashing in an out of my vision (the range of doses were from 250mg to 325mg, respectively).

However, yesterday was somewhat odd. I like to skype with friends when under the influence in order to have some company, and of course I did dial up some friends. I took 500mg of benadryl (25mg dipenhydramine pills), and sat back. At first, the feeling I would describe as the onset would be similar to that of staying up until 4 in the morning, which is what is happening right now, and the onset I experienced closely matches the sleepiness that I am experiencing! If I took a guess, I would say that it took about 30 minutes or so for the full effects of benadryl to kick in. I soon found myself to be beyond this point and venturing into the "holy shit I need a nap" zone, so I got off of skype on my pc, went onto skype on my phone, laid down, and browsed the web for a bit. It was only until I got off skype afterwards that things started to get pretty weird. Just a warning, beyond this point my sense of time was a bit shoddy.

I went into my kitchen to get some milk, as I was extremely thirsty. I couldn't walk straight, and when I stood up, it felt as if I was carrying a few hundred pounds on my back. I was very delirious at this point, and ended up walking in a half circle in order to get to my fridge without falling. I felt a sensation on my body similar to ants crawling everywhere, but out of fear, didn't look down at the rest of me at all. I walked into the kitchen for some milk and came out with a gallon of Hawaiian punch, somehow =D

I went back into my room and sat down for a bit, and then decided that I wanted to watch a movie. I had my laptop hooked up to my TV, and put on the movie Notorious, to which I watched for a good amount of time (or so it felt like). I do remember getting to the part where he meets puffy, for those of you who have watched it, so even for those of you who haven't, it was a decent amount of time. I turned it off afterwards to try and go to sleep, since I was so tired. The couple things I noted were mainly that I could not get to sleep, and that I had a lot of trouble trying to keep my legs still, as I would constantly shift to try and be comfortable. I also felt as if I wanted to vomit, which frightened me a little, as I didn't want to vomit while asleep.

This is where things get REALLY weird. The hallucinations begin, but I'm not really sure if they are hallucinations, or whether I was living inside of my own mind. The first instance of this were the walls, and this was definitely a hallucination. It looked as if they were pulsating with a light blue color, as if the tv were still on, casting a light everywhere. However, the tv was off. This continued with a few different pieces of furniture, mainly my clothes dresser and bedframe.

Maybe 5 or so minutes later, the feelings of being both mentally and physically bogged down are increased dramatically, as if someone pulled a lever or turned a dial on the scale of highness 8(. I started talking to myself; I don't remember why, but I remember catching myself in the act of doing so and telling myself that it wasn't normal, and that I was acting high. After this, I started hallucinating water bottles, littering my floor. At this point, I was having immense trouble identifying things on my floor, barely able to discern my laptop from my skateboard (skateboard was somewhat on top of the laptop due to a related accident earlier, so that made things somewhat worse). I would try to pick up what looked to be a water bottle, only to find that I was essentially grasping at nothing, and would be just looking at a plastic wrapper, or a discoloration of the carpet. I do explicitly remember being able to open one of the water bottles however, and then I remember holding what looked to be a dimebag of weed, which confused me (a lot).

My stepmom walked into the room, and I freaked out, thinking I was still holding the weed (in hindsight this was just a semi-intricate hallucination), however she just started talking to me, asking me to take out the trash, which confused me as my cable box clock read 1:00am. I was able to put 2 and 2 together, and realized this was a hallucination. The trippiest part, however, is that I think that I had my eyes closed, because I remember opening them and wondering how I got to my bed shortly afterward. This is the main reason that I think I was living in my own head, it all just seemed so real.

I read a lot of trip reports on erowid prior to touching dipenhydramine, and I figured that at some point I would have hallucinations of some sort of insect or spider, and sure enough when I shined my phone light onto my bed, there was a spider right there. I squashed it, and that was the only occurence. I'm not entirely sure if that was real or not.

I was able to go to bed, and had some really awesome, but weird and random dreams later on. I am a strong advocate for trying things yourself, and while I would not recommend this for regular use, at all, outside of its uses as a sleep aid/antihistamine, I would say that it was interesting, and while accepting that it did venture into the unpleasant realm for a little bit, overall it was something to laugh about. For anyone reading this who hasn't tried it but is thinking of it, I warn you of a few things: you will get scared on it, most likely, unless you're experienced with hallucination-inducing drugs (and in that case, why not just do something else if you have access?), you will get extremely thirsty, and you should not do this around people you need to be sober around. I cannot stress that last part enough. You can not and will not be able to act sober on it, no matter how hard you try. I've been able to act sober on acid, but I could not, for the life of me, act sober on this drug (something I like to try, to measure different aspects of drugs and the way they affect me).

I would also strongly recommend preparation. Lots of refreshments at hand, lots of time and a place to sleep, because you will get tired. I hope this post has helped.

Overall, I don't really think its the kind of high I like, so I'll be moving on to something more enjoyable. In the meantime, I'll be using this for rashes only. =D

If you want an OTC high that's more worth doing, I'd try Dextromethorphan (DXM). Much more pleasant, although nausea can be a big issue (more so with the syrup, less with the Robitussin gel caps, and like no nausea at all with the "Agent Lemon Extraction" of DXM). If you wanna try DXM, I definitely recommend taking some Benadryl/Diphenhydramine (50mg) before you start tripping (Not before you take everything, as it takes two hours to come up and DPH doesn't last the comeup AND the whole trip, take it like 1hr - 1.5hr after you dose). It helps a LOT with nausea, lets you go to sleep after the trip real easily, adds some nice sedation, potentiates a good amount, etc... Also, dosing DXM over a period of, say, 2 hrs, can be much more pleasant as well.

Also you sound responsible for someone writing a Benadryl trip report, good on you! (Not being sarcastic, a lot of DPH trip reports seem to be written by people that try to kill themselves or want sleep "super hard" for a long time)

EDIT: Sorry, kind of went off topic with the whole DXM thing haha, just figured if you tripped on Benadryl you might be interested in something that's not nearly as unpleasant and still OTC :D

I try to be really cautious when it comes to putting chemicals into my body, which is somewhat odd to say considering that I do drugs.
I've done DXM before and found it to be really pleasant when coupled with weed. I'm not really an OTC guy but I just had to ditch most of my weed for unrelated reasons, so I figured it would be a good time to see whether or not people were being serious about benadryl or just bullshitting.
Needless to say, benadryl kicked my arse.
