was way to high on MXE to go into my shitty job as a nightclub glass collector tonight, so i've been sacked. I also failed Uni, but have an foundation degree.

what do you do when you have no references?

tell me about it.

Go on one of them "Restart" courses the Jobcentre runs to get people back to work. In my experience, this is the single best way to find out how to lie on your CV or cheat your way into work. My old gf went on one of these in the 90's. It was held in a church basement in Richmond. It took 3 days to find the light switch, the fourth day was cancelled coz the light showed the basement was flooded & the final day was spent learning how to stretch the truth on your CV, lie about qualifications & experience etc etc. I suspect the entire endevour cost the benefits system more money than it saved!

Anyway, sorry to hear that Hex, but surely another job of equally shiteness would not be that hard to find... Best of luck!

What do to? This is Bluelight and you damn well know what's the right thing to do. Order another fat sack of RCs to take your mind off things, go ballistic.

Then sober up and finish your degree. Or walk into a jobcenter or somesuch to get another shitty gig that you won't take seriously.

You sound young enough not to have to really worry about references TBH and the job/s you've had don't sound like they would cut that much ice with an employer anyway.

Personally I wouldn't bother trying to falsify references as they are the one thing that employers may well check up on, IME.

If you're out of work and able to do so get yourself down to a temping agency or find a part/full-time job anywhere you can, other people may disagree but you have to start somewhere and I strongly believe that the employed have much more chance of getting a job elsewhere. If you can get to and interview and are able to tell them you've been working a crappy job to make ends meet that would be far more valuable than a reference for part time job collecting glasses in a nightclub, not that there is anything wrong with that job either.

believe in the power of the universe to sort things out for you it works. I lost my job at the beginning of may and I'm working again now in a better job. Don't worry. Life is too short to worry.

Hmm, ay. That is probably a better idea than going back to school, much less stressful at least. Just believe in the power of other things to sort it all out for you.

I agree! It's not about actually doing anything, all you have to do is believe in yourself and the power of the things around you and embrace it!

Do a bit of volunteering though do-it.org uk for fun/experience and you'll also get a reference out of it. Also sign up to a recruitment agency as a temp worker and do some crappy office work for a few weeks.. there's another reference sorted. You can also use your tutor at Uni until you get better ones. :)

Really ? you just sit on your arse and a job will land in your lap ?? I've never tried that approach myself so I can't dismiss it out of hand but I'm far from convinced ;)

My post was inspired by pinkpapaver's response, what's wrong with harnessing the power of the energies around you?! Fuck looking for work, if fate works properly a job will find you!

Now there's some good ideas, gonna make a note of them myself. I'll have so many list of ideas and 'things to do' soon that I'll have to transfer them to a book, or get them scanned into my pc.

How's your job hunting going btw? Are you kind of being choosy about what you're applying for, or just going for anything?

This I think is the best approach, sign on for a bit, do some volunteer work, get a few references that way.

The best jobs I have had have not required interviews nor references.

A corpse can probably get a better gig than a glass collector, don't over-think it and just do something.

You pay your own bills?

Well.. there is some sense in this, in that the best jobs are often ones you hear about through networking/word-of-mouth etc, like jude says.

Mm.. the short-term of "ohshit-I-need-some-money-now" isn't too choosy and am just looking for anything temporary to pay the bills. The long-term plan is a bit more strategic and involves volunteering and networking and training etc. But I definitely recommend volunteering as a way of keeping your CV looking alright - employers really don't like gaps of unemployment.
