Im on a benzo taper so my doctor was looking through options of non benzo/gaba related drugs for insomnia, she has given me 2 weeks worth of amitriptyline to try, 25mg dose to take at night as its ment to be pretty sedative, but im a bit worried about possible side effects, thats a pretty small dose but could i get any nasty side effects? One of them is heart block! (accoring to wiki) which sounds a bit extreme.

Any experiences?

just taken one 25mg tablet, actually a bit worried about reading all the bad side effects, as long as it gets me sedated i dont mind though, just dont wanna seizure (benzo taper, probably lowered seizure threshold already) and dont wanna get weird heart side effects :P

any input on this med whilst im still awake lol?

I have had them prescribed for jaw pain/spasm (I have TMJ) and insomnia. I wouldn't worry too much about side effects, as long as you're not taking any MAOI'S or SSRI's. And I did find, that while not a 'wonder drug' by any means, they did help me to STAY asleep once I GOT to sleep, and I had AMAZING dreams! Also, they did make my jaw a bit more comfortable and relaxed. This was, however the good old days. Now I have to make sure I've got my Fent on, and smoke a bit-o-tar before bed, or it just isn't happening! Good luck, Bignbrown! (BTW, that name makes me crave brownies. Way to go! lol;)

I found amitriptyline to work really well for sleep in fact it's one of the best meds ive tried for sleep. It can cause some nasty next day side effects like a hangover feeling and bad dry mouth but i found it to be tolerable enough. I was on 150mg's a night (the max outpatient dose) until they figured out that i had bipolar disorder and not unipolar depression.

Don't mix it with cocaine and becareful mixing it with any stimulants due to it's cardiotoxicity. At 25mg's a day you shouldnt have to worry about any heart troubles unless you mix it with something.

Stay away from that shit.. that is the devils drug.

shit had me up all night watering the lawn in my underwear-- and it can kill you

give it back and tell him to give you something decent

well it did make me feel drowsy but still took a while to fall asleep, but once i was asleep i stayed asleep, for 12 hours! and feel drowsy as hell today. Didnt like the side effects it gave me whilst trying to sleep though so wont be using again.

heya bignbrown, swim has tried this med for chronic pain, the hangover next day will go away after a few days , maybe a week of taking it. swim only took it for a week and it caused great constipation, swims GI has big problems with motility and spasm.. i doubt you have the same side effect.. as swims gut is in a bad way really.

i wish you all the luck with this med, and your sleep disorder, ask your dr. about melatonin supplement, and some of the natural OTC ones that are rather costly.. swim uses doxylamine succinate AKA the stuff in night quil, almost every night.

-pain :|

i know this stuff has a long half life, today im having some beers is that ok? any adverse reactions?

a lot of alc may extend your benzo withdrawal cause it works on the same receptors. I am withdrawing from benzos as well and do not wanna do something that is gonna hinder my progress. What are you tapering off and what is the dose? in on 10mg of lib right now

I echo the sentiment that it is a crap medication. If it works for some people that's great, but it's not something that should be pushed on people for insomnia.

Antihistamines are a much better choice, I would have at least asked for Atarax, I think it'd do much better for sleep than TCA's.

I turned it down and got Atarax instead, and I am much happier. :D

^although drugs like amitriptyline and nortriptyline are classified as TCA's, they are antihistaminergic and anticholinergic and are very similar to drugs like diphenhydramine in anticholinergic activity with more pronounced snri effects.

First gen antihistamines, TCA's and cyclobenzaprine are all pretty similar pharmacologically.

adding my input:

Got prescribed 2x25mg amitriptyline (tryptizol) at night for long time insomnia and nerve pain.

- Worked quite good for 1-2 weeks then it's stopped working.
- Still work for neuralgia (2feet and legs broken, was too drunk and on high dose of resarch chemical and jumped from the 2floor of a building..)

One day I took 10x25mg ami and 3x200 tramadol ER "broken in powder" .. was such an ignorant...
I got a massive epilepsia or serotonin syndrom. And had to go to the emergency... again. I have used tramadol for a long time but NEVER EVER combine Tricyclic AD wit high dose of tramadol.

And for fucking sake! I forgot to take benzo with it.
