Seven months after a crash in Chestnuthill Township that killed a man, state police arrested the driver and charged him with homicide by vehicle while driving impaired.

State police arrested Robert P. Steinmetz, 39, at his home Wednesday and charged him with driving under the influence of prescription painkillers and anti-anxiety drugs.

The May 11 crash occurred when his Chevrolet Lumina crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic on Route 209 near the Chestnuthill Diner and collided with a Dodge sedan driven by Dale William Dennis, 48, of Bartonsville.

Both men were seriously injured and the road was closed for several hours as emergency crews cleared the scene and police investigated. Dennis was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital where he died two weeks later of his injuries. Steinmetz was also flown to the hospital.

While being treated, a blood test was ordered on Steinmetz. The results came back May 30 and indicated his driving was impaired by prescription painkillers and anti-anxiety medication. According to the criminal complaint filed Wednesday, Steinmetz had the painkiller Oxycodone in his blood, as well as anti-anxiety drugs Diazepam, Nordiazepam and Temazepam.[/B] Investigators believe these drugs contributed to Steinmetz driving into oncoming traffic and led to the Dennis' death.

The head-on crash that killed Dennis was the second similar accident in less than two weeks for Steinmetz. Eleven days before, he was involved in another accident in Chestnuthill Township.

The 1994 Honda Civic he was driving on McIlhaney Drive crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a Jeep driven by Grace Marks of Saylorsburg, a legislative assistant for state Sen. Patrick Browne, R-16.

Marks was flown by medical helicopter to an area hospital after that crash and Steinmetz suffered minor injuries, police said. There's no record that Steinmetz was cited in the crash with Marks.

State police arrested Steinmetz at his home on Wednesday and he was arraigned before Pocono Pines Magisterial District Court Judge Richard Claypool, police said.

Steinmetz was taken to county jail on $75,000 bail and charges of homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, DUI and other charges. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for later this month.

He wouldnt of been charged if he had not done it twice in two weeks. And the first one he hit a legislative assistant for a senator, of course there gonna be up is ass.

It's in a different country to me, and 5 miles away from you. I think you're the one that needs to be careful in this regard :p

And yeah, people driving on drugs is almost always dangerous, cars are incredibly powerful.

what were they doing for 7 months? If I was the victims family I'd of used that time to meet the fella', I don't get how it could possibly take that long to arrest him unless he was in the hospital the whole time.

Steinmetz had the painkiller Oxycodone in his blood, as well as anti-anxiety drugs Diazepam, Nordiazepam and Temazepam

.... So he had Oxy and Diazepam in his system then (Nordiaz & Temaz are metabolites of Diaz).

Jermalizumzmzmzmzmzmzzz :|

Pretty typical my house mates been out on bail for 6 months and only just been notified of when to attend court July next year

^yeah he was already charged if he was out on bail right? it doesn't look like this guy had even been confronted about it till just now

wait, why should we be careful? I dont understand wat the hell u tryna say....Be careful of wat? cops arrestin us for this type of shit? The dude killed somebody and smashed up somebody else, drivin fucked up twice in 2 weeks. hes a dick. if anything ppl should be careful of assholes doin that shit. I aint sure wat u meant by ur title at all, its so un clear and like someone else said i think its YOU that should be careful you the one who lives by there, we aint got nothin to do with it....wat a strange post....

Don't drive while impaired, even on legal medication.

Magnum Force (1973)
Harry Callahan: "A man's got to know his limitations."

I too am confused by your title. I don't know if these drugs were prescribed to him or not but its obvious he was very intoxicated and should not be driving. I would see your point if he was in an unavoidable accident and being charged on the basis of having taken meds that were prescribed to him but it couldn't be proven he was abusing them or otherwise intoxicated at the time of the crash, this guy was just wreckless.

why was this dude driving? He accidentally nods off and hits pedestrians & other cars, 10+points for GriffinDoor!
