SCRANTON – Three Lackawanna County judges approved an injunction against six city businesses banning the sale of synthetic drugs disguised as bath salts on Wednesday morning.

The court order comes after weeks of incidents surrounding the synthetic drugs and a day after Scranton City Council first announced a future ordinance intended to ban the sale and possession of the product.

Lackawanna County District Attorney Andy Jarbola, the plaintiff in the order, called the injunction a “stopgap measure” until proposed statutes move through the Pennsylvania legislature.

^ Indeed it is forthcoming.

As someone relatively local to the area I can say that bath salts are indeed a problem in the area.
Not due to the substance itself but more because of the users.
I know a good number of people who IV these bath salts.
These same users mix said salts with Methamphetamine, Cocaine, etc. & bang away.
Needless to say this results in multi-day binges, seizures (first hand knowledge) & in some cases death (second hand as a friend of a friend).

The other user's I'm familiar with tend to be younger people just out of high school or in there early to mid 20's.
Most of these users are completely un-educated regarding substance use.
They may have smoked some pot or popped an occasional pill.
They tend to have no real knowledge of substances & they proceed to sniff or freebase (horrible technique) the salt's & end up with problems.
They don't seem to realize the effects or the duration of them & end up not realizing anything is wrong till after they've gone batshit & done something stupid.

Though I'm against regulating substances in general the sheer & utter stupidity of the average user in the article's general area doesn't bode well.
Well at least the one's I'm familiar with anyways. :\

It's sad there's so many ignorant drug user's who complicate the legalization arguments by there blatant lack of respect for the substances they use. :|

You should of seen the news lately. It's the first story on everyday (I live in the Scranton area). All they talk about is 'bath salts' and how horrible they are, then they talk about how 'these bath salts are not the kind you can buy at a beauty store, they are marketted under names like...." so on and so forth, I wish they would just say 'Mephedrone', is that so hard.

I hear ya there.
Some relatively local newspapers do make references to the chemicals though.
I believe the Towanda paper (The Daily Review) mentioned that the salt's where mephedrone or MDPV.

But I agree the media coverage is terrible & done in a very un-informed manner.

I went to college in Scranton. While you find idiots everywhere, the Lackawanna Valley held a membership drive: when they took the mules out of the coal mines, the region's collective IQ dropped by 10 points.

I'm not surprised that they're having problems with bath salts. Stupidity plus MDPV is a recipe for disaster.

^ I have to stand up and defend my homeland here!

You're mistaking 'stupidity' for conservative values. I agree, the people in my valley are very wary of 'new things' and often greet them with hostility. It doesn't surprise me that people are protesting the sale of bath salts, espically when you see bottom of the barrel style down on their luck drug addicts that don't own a thing except the clothes they're wearing associated with these drugs.

These same people have also gotten me out of trouble on more than one occassion for things that are better left unsaid. They have a tradition of taking care of their own, and tradition is a wonderful thing when you're part of it.

So yea we may be a little backwards, but I love it, in a strange way...

And so it begins... Get ready, the cathinone sweep is coming.
Oh well... MDPV and mephedrone certainly are not doing anyone any good. Not that I think they should be banned, but neither shouldn't they be banned, if ya know what I mean. There's nothing bad about anyone quitting mephedrone or MDPV use... at best they are useless entertainments, at worse dangerous. And I mess with MDPV myself, for what it's worth.
