Basque Country to Legalize, Regulate Marijuana

The parliament of Spain's Basque Country Autonomous Community will approve a new drug law early next year that will regulate marijuana cultivation, distribution, and consumption, EFE reported Tuesday.

The Basque Country Autonomous Community is charged with setting and enforcing domestic law within its borders in northeastern Spain. If the bill passes, it would mark a direct challenge to the United Nations' 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, which forbids marijuana legalization.

"It's better to regulate than to ban," said Jesus Maria Fernandez, second in command at the region's health authority. Regulating "the growing, sale, and consumption of cannabis" is a better approach to pot smoking, he said, calling it "a practice that is already consolidated."

Where next, I wonder, Catalonia? When I visited, the practice seemed consolidated there too. Plants growing in full view on rural terrace balconies.

I hope the "regulation of production" will not mean that home growers are persecuted in favour of commercialisation.

my ancestors! ("235360287471352662" is actually a Basque name)

So weed is legal in (if I remember correctly) Holland, Portugal, Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, Copenhagen and now the Basque region. I think.

Guys, read the article. The bill hasn't actually passed yet. Still, it's a step forward. Hopefully it does pass, this way the rest of the world can take note.

And as far as I'm aware, no country in the world grows, distributes and regulates it's own marijuana. I think most people confuse decriminalized with legal. I'm pretty sure it's not even technically legal in Amsterdam, but tolerated.

It’s a clothing company I model for AZ203 all about medical marijuana. we gotta start this economic growth baby start growing those trees. legallize it everywhere! puts smiles on everyone!

Go Portugal!!!!!! ^^No.. Seriously read this^^^!!!! See the USA need to do this because the reason drugs are so popular starting out young is because they are illegal, it’s cool to do illegal things as a kid and then we learn to love it as we get older we learn that it’s ok we aren't doing anything wrong, just getting fucked up! I would know I'm a recovering heroin addict myself. I started at 14 smoking then a day later i was banging it and did that for almost a year and a half. I was following the older crowd and wanted to be like them and get high like them cause it was a rush doing it and the rush of doing something wrong. You can get a rush from doing anything illegal, it the rush of trying to not get caught. Not so much fun once that “wrong thing” turns around and bites your ass right? Lets get on the same page as portugal.
