Barbiturates

My now five month old son was prescribed some type of barbiturate when we first took him home from the hospital. He was born addicted to opiates unfortunately and Im not positive, but I think they prescribed it just in case he still had slight symptoms of opiate withdrawal. Of course that was awhile ago and he no longer needs it. Im not positive what exact type of barbiturate it is but its either pentobarbital, phenobarbital, secobarbital or butalbital. I was unaware before today that barbiturates can be IV'd. my question is since it came in liquid form would this be safe to inject? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

I don't understand your question. Is it for your son or for you?

You have what looks like injectable barbiturate, but you're not sure of what barbiturate it is? That's a big problem, as barbiturates can be of different strength and duration of action.

The doctor didn't tell you what it is? Be careful!
 
Yeah sorry it was a little confusing. My son, who fortunately turned into a wonderful healthy baby boy, was born addicted to opiates so they weened him off with morphine at the hospital of course. Then they gave us the barbiturate for him to use sparingly in case any small symptoms still lingered for a few weeks after. We cant give it to him anymore, of course, so I was just wondering if it is safe to IV. I have a high tolerance and Im assuming the dose was low anyways since it was for a newborn baby and Id start off small. I was just an idiot and decided to rip the sticker off thinking I wouldnt need it again. Its liquid, of course we used an eye dropper to administer it to him, but Id like to know if it is possible to inject.
 
No. Don't try to inject it to your baby. Throw the medication away. It's very dangerous. You even don't know what is inside them for sure.

Either you are a medical professional and are authorized to administrate medications, or you're not and I don't know why or how the doctor would have given you this barbiturate for injection purposes to your son.
 
the doctor gave it to me to take awhile the mild symptoms of withdrawal for my son that may linger for a couple weeks after he left the hospital. That was six months ago. I only had him use it for 2 weeks cuz I wanted to get him off it as quick as possible. Its just been sitting around the i read a ton of places you could. I was talking about injecting myself. I would never do that to a child let alone my own.
 
Ah okay... Sorry for that, I misunderstood what you were saying.

Well, the answer is the same: don't do it. You don't know what barbiturate is in your ampule, you admitted yourself that it was already opened, that's a lot of hazardous parameters.

Barbiturates are dangerous, add to that the fact you don't know which one you've got and you're in presence of a potentially lethal bomb. After that, it's up to you.

It is most likely phenobarbital because that is used I think 99% of cases where a child is born addicted to opiates. Has a long half life and I am thinking is pretty safe barbiturate so thats why they give it to babies. Do not take it yourself though because firstly phenobarbital is really not recreational and I guess you do not know the dosage and what to expect from phenobarbital. If your baby no longer needs the med please return it to a pharmacy they will dispose of it. Also if it is to be taken orally I do not think it is wise to inject it because even though it is liquid you dont know what sort of additives and other chemicals are in it because its an oral formula right?
 
Just rid of it, end of story. Taking it, via any route of administration, would be very dangerous w/o knowing the dose. It is likely phenobarbital, and if you take certain amount you might not feel much of anything for a long while, so you might re-dose, and in poor judgement, end up taking far too much, and with any barbiturate too much is not much at all. ALL barbiturates are very dangerous. That is really all there is to it. I advise, with the greatest concern, that you dispose of it. You won't be getting rid of anything particularly good. Most don't enjoy the effects of phenobarbital for recreation. Just don't do it. VERY, VERY dangerous and risky to even begin dosing ANY of it. Please dispose of it safely and completely.
 
get rid of it? yeah right.

don't IV it. it is obviously an oral preparation. probably has sweetener and all kinds of gross stuff you wouldn't wanna put in your veins at all, let alone after its been sitting around for so long.
