Misc Barbiturates vs Primidone - hypnotic?

Hi,
I have always wanted to try barbiturates, but after recently trying primidone, I might have changed my mind. I found the primidone to be extremely hypnotic. It's so hypnotic that it ruined the experience. I had to just sleep it off because I couldn't think.
I am wondering if real barbiturates have this same level of hypnosis? Are there any barbiturates that are not hypnotic at all? Just sedative. Soma is a good example for me. It's a little hypnotic, but not too much. This is what I thought barbs were like.
