Barbiturates & Opiates? How affective are they actually at potentation?

Specifically referring to Butalbital (Fioricet) with Vicodin? In which way do barbs potentate each other? Is it mainly the sedation that increases or the overall euphoria? Any insight on this would be appreciated, thanks guys.
