WASHINGTON – Approval last month in the U.S. House of Representatives of legislation that would prohibit the sale of synthetic marijuana and other drugs known as “bath salts” and “plant food” has been delayed indefinitely in the Senate, American Medical News reports.

The House voted 317-98 on December 8 to ban the synthetic drugs, which can mimic the effects of marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamines; however, the Senate companion bill has been held up by an objection from Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY).

Public health officials and physician groups support the legislation because they maintain there is no known medicinal use for the substances, while use of the products has led to numerous medical emergencies.

. . .

Some lawmakers said they oppose the legislation as it is written because of its potentially “chilling effect” on scientific research.

"These drugs need to be controlled, but they need to be controlled in such a way that there is no harm done to the vital scientific and medical research that we count on," said U.S. Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA).

Just leave the fuckin' drugs alone already. Haven't these people done enough? Do the right thing. DON'T GET INVOLVED. People have died, families have been destoryd, it's time to GET MOVING.

Here's my thing on rules. I only have one rule, and that rule is that there can be no rules. Anything's fair game.

Personally, when it comes to rights, I think one of two things is true: I think either we have unlimited rights, or we have no rights at all. Personally, I lean toward unlimited rights - I feel, for instance, I have the right to do anything I please. But, if I do something you don't like, I think you have the right to kill me. So where you gonna find a fairer fucking deal than that? So the next time some asshole says to you, "I have a right to my opinion," you say, "Oh yeah? Well, I have a right to my opinion, and my opinion is that you have no right to your opinion." Then shoot the fuck and walk away!

Thank god somebody has some common sense. I don't use MDPV and the like, and never will, but banning the shit isn't the answer and never has been.

This is a little bizarre. I agree with the senators, but why the change of heart now? They ban the good shit like 2C-B, LSD, MDMA which have been shown to be useful in several different medical contexts, but they get cold feet for MPDV? Come the fuck on.

^ yeah but this is possibly a turning point. This is a positive step for drug use/research imo. They should throw the bill out, we have bigger issues on our plate as a country than substance use. All they seem to discuss is how these drugs are so similar to coke/meth/weed but they forget about the state of the economy, among other things.

If the 2C ban bill goes ahead but the synthetic cannabinoid and cathinone bill is thrown out I'm gonna go berserk.

I seriously think MDPV is lining somebody's pockets. Recently passed legislation in my state makes possession of any cathinone (and some other groups but the cathinones are what I remember best), in any amount, a felony. EXCEPT for MDPV, having 1 g or less of that is a misdemeanor. Seems fishy to me...

I think he's against because he doesn't think the punishment is not hard enough and he also has issues with how much money the DEA spends.
Maybe but he does have some libertarian leanings even though he is not as vocally against the drug war as his father Ron Paul is. Do you have a source or are you just speculating?

THIS IS NOT JUST MDPV!

Many legal 2c's are included in the bill that Rand Paul defended!
2c-c, 2c-d, 2c-e, 2c-i, 2c-p, 2c-t-2, and all the "main" 2c's (not counting 2c-t) but even the precursor 2c-h!

Also some things like MDAI which just shouldn't be scheduled and haven't hurt anyone

This list included 41 substances, don't you care that someone stopped a bill (temporarily) that was going to limit your freedom? The bill even had substitution laws, meaning there would be a uk-like law on substituting for different analogs on some of the cannabinoids and such. You should be thankful!

2c-i for example, would illegal in the US if it wasn't for Rand Paul! And I feel like Ron Paul as president is the last hope we have to make the constitution even matter.

Just watch this cartoon. Seriously. :)

It really proves a point.

No, this is everything. 2c's, cannabinoids, methylone, ethylone, MDAI, all cathinones (which i dont care for but prohibition is NOT GOOD).

What bothers me the most is scheduling chemicals they known nothing about, which is why I'm so glad Rand Paul stepped up to the plate and mentioned this. Its so fucking important, I've been thinking about this for days. I was so surprised when this happened. this bill "breezed" through the senate, and thankfully someone said something.

And most people here on bluelight seem to think this is just stimulants and the such! NO!

^Thats all of them. And thank god they're not banning some of these wonderful chemicals (like 2c-c) that have never hurt anyone without any research. That would just be fucked. But honestly what bothered me the most is that most people here on bluelight who replied to this thought this was just about MDPV and "designer stimulants" when it includes some novel compounds and 8 psychs and a precursor...

This is bill H.R. 1254
does the senate vote on a different version of the bill or the same one? I'm trying to track it and all other "related legislation" has been abandoned it seems. All Senate "bans" are pretty much inactive right now, just this one bill.

Note: sorry about the smilies, dont know how to fix that
