Backyard Vegetable Gardening & Livestock Raising & Sustainable Living

watermelons starting to grow. Finally had some bees locate my balcony and it looks like they come back every day now, thankfully I no longer have to pollinate by hand.

In the city, that's excellent. Inspired, I have just been watching youtube videos of pumpkins and melons that were being trellised. The hammocks people use are a great idea :)

Yeah, right in the middle of the city lol. There are some challenges but i've been pretty successful. That giant white building across the alley is a big help, it reflects tons of sunlight throughout the whole day.

I think i'm going to use some of my wife's old pantyhose as hammocks. These are sugarbaby watermelons so they will only weight 5-10 pounds or so.

Something like this

We're eating mad figs right now. To the point where I'm googling what to do with them because we've got so many. We have no other plants but figs.

i have more tomoatos and cucumbers than i know what to do with. come get some.

so...figs, eh? i have a fig tree in my front yard, but it's not doing anything right now. tell me about figs, i don't know anything about them, other than they're delicious.

i've read that sometimes they produce in the fall, so i guess it depends on the kind of fig tree? i have no clue what kind of fig tree i have. i'm dumb as fuck.

Im going to try, because of my budget, buying this season at walmart or Home depot a few already started tomato and green pepper plants. They would meet my needs as I don't have the time to start any seeds from scratch.
Does anyone have any experience buying small plants ( tomato or any other edible type ) from walmart or home depot? How did yours turn out?

Were they tasty? That's the main thing that I am looking for: taste and a bountiful harvest. I live in Central Florida.

i started with purchased small plants. from a local nursery. i don't have much to compare it to, but no intention of switching to seeds next year.

best are the orange blaze sweet bell peppers, better boy tomatoes (not pictured), and the sunsugar hybrid yellow cherry tomatoes. bed is way too crowded. apparently i should have picked some of the eggplants and zucchini sooner, but doesn't matter. they're all just going bad on my, family, and friends' countertops. tomatoes and peppers are coveted. will do a better job prioritizing when assigning bed space next year.

that jalapeno, beagleboy? looks good. on my list for next year. don't know what i was thinking leaving it off this year.

those apricots look good too.

just wet outside with the clippers...

lots of grape tomatoes. which are good. not nearly as good as the yellow cherry. the bigger tomatoes are being difficult and spotting, splitting, and going bad while on the plant. i'm picking them earlier, though i'm not sure how early is too early. the best boys on the right are so good. the tops are always messed up, but the bottom 2/3rds are making my sandwiches.

i have a tomato plant and 3 pepper plants from home depot that are doing really well, and are delicious. most of the plants in my garden are from the small organic place i usually go to, but i needed a few extra plants to fill up the garden this year and went to home depot out of convenience. no complaints at all.

I order a bunch of seeds for various catalogs. Went a bit crazy. Since im urban i had to get creative with space. WY too much shit. Too many seeds. But hey ill have seed stock for years

^ That is great Pharcyde. Good luck mate.

The Tomato I talked about in post 617 eventually came back a bit and is flowering heavily. I would like to plant next to and around this as spring is only a fortnight away, but I am having trouble thinking of what would go well because I don't water this tomato much. Here is a photo, which isn't so great because it was right on sunset :)

That's cranking out the flowers, is it a cherry tomato? Did many of the flowers set fruit?

What have you put in for spring?

Pretty sure it is called Tommie Toe or Tiny Tim, I will have to check but yes it is a cherry. It set a few fruit but mostly still flowering and to early to tell.

I potted a heap of curly parsley and sweet basil seedlings into 100mm pots a few weeks ago to be planted out in a group plot at a local community garden. They are growing but probably won't be ready until it significantly warms up in a month or so. Undecided about what I will put in at home.

Cooking was a much less stressful hobby. My plants are giving me such grief.

One of my fiddle leaf figs has rust.
My gardenia has scale.
I had a full-blown mealy worm infestation a few months ago.
My tomatoes are splitting now, due to the unending rain.
The tomatillos are being eaten alive by grasshoppers.
And, somehow I'm having trouble keeping aloe alive???

I'm attempting to treat this organically, but fungus? Fuck.

(I know most of these aren't veggies, but I don't care.)

I have a dragon tree and confederate jasmine that are absolutely loving life. Plenty of other guys are too, but those two live right next to each other and make me very happy.

And, I don't remember who it was who initially recommended Gardenweb to me a while ago, but thank you so freaking much.
