I think the main benefit of the safe injection sites (or overdose prevention center as they are now calling them here in the US) is more so that people can be immediately administered naloxone.

The access to other resources is wonderful and should absolutely be encouraged. But like you said, many people simply can’t be bothered.

I think that aspect of the sites is emphasized simply because it can help win over some of the more agnostic types. But I’m really not sure how effective they are with facilitating a transition away from street drugs

But NYC’s center has reversed I think around 300 overdoses so far, well above their initial projections. So to me that means they are worth it.
 
I feel like the amount you can legally carry should based on potent the drug is....making everything crystal meth to fentanyl all have 2.5 gram.limit...
I feelmwhen this goes into effect drug dealers are going to be like I make much much more selling 2g of fentanyl over 2g of heroin.
This I feel is going to make the fentanyl epidemic worse.

The problem I have is with a broad 2.5g carry limit....who is going stock any opiate besides fentanyl??
How much could you make selling 2.5g of heroin vs 2.5g fentanyl.
Everyone will just be sling fentanyl with this system.
By making heroin more easily accessible by keeping it at 2.5g
And fentanyl legal only at like 20mg or whatever I think we'd see more heroin and less fentanyl.
Or just keep fentanyl illegal and allow small Importation and possession of heroin....I think fentanyl would take a back seat if heroin was easily accessible.

Like I know I'm expressing an unpopular opinion on BL but I don't think ALL drugs should decriminalized... but most should...like I don't think very many people would even consider fentanyl if they could have access to better, safer alternatives.

I would. Well not anymore. But when I was using I much preferred fentanyl. It was my opioid of choice. I bought it straight from a factory in China.

So somebody like me, should face prosecution... but not a heroin user... because of their preference? Or because of the fact they are more likely to overdose on it?

I agree that a blanket 2.5 g limit probably is not the best. Perhaps something like MME could’ve been used

But I still don’t think that means only heroin should be decrim

The reason fentanyl is so prevalent is due to the logistics of production and shipping

It can be made in large quantities in a lab and easier to ship around the world for cheap

It’s just all around cheaper on the supply side

I don’t think the decrim policy of one Canadian province will affect the global production that much

Fent isnt going anywhere

Importation of any amount will still be illegal, but regardless, if the entrenched drug addicts of the streets of Vancouver had the sophistication and resources to order drugs from the Dark Web, there probably wouldn't be an epidemic of drug poisoning deaths there.

This policy is in response to the street opioid market already being completely dominated by fentanyl. There is very little if any unadulterated heroin left to displace. Setting the limit for fentanyl at 20 mg would make the entire policy pointless, as no one is going to be carrying such a small amount.

But with the system I suggested it would encourage non fentanyl opioids if it were legal to posses and fentanyl was not.... don't ya think?

This was exactly my point....it would discourage fentanyl and not safer opioids.
 
@Ballz_Trippington Decrim of traditional opioids (e.g. heroin) in B.C. won’t affect the global trafficking network of fentanyl

The problem is that unadulterated heroin essentially does not exist anymore. Perhaps a global decriminalization of heroin would eat away at the fentanyl market.

But as it stands right now, only decriminalizing heroin would essentially help nobody
 
Just for the record, I’m not in BC either lol. I live in the midwestern United States

But I do know fentanyl is very prevalent in BC (although i guess it’s prevalent just about anywhere these days)

No I don't think so, since its not legalization, and its still dangerous to have large amounts, so the supply network still benefits from having a stronger substance thats easier to transport. Also we're already at the point where fentanyl has been around so long that lots of peoples tolerance has grown to the point where heroin no longer works. So maybe, if heroin was completely legalized, 20 years ago, that might have worked to prevent fentanyl from getting a foothold.
 
By next year BC will be decriminalizing it for 3 years. Toronto applied around the same time . Today, the out of touch ministry of mental health and addiction was asked what she thought about compassion clubs for safe supply . She said she felt uncomfortable having these clubs give products from the dark web. The number of deaths is set to reach around 3,500 by the end of the year. Currently, there only a handful of safe supply clubs approved by the Canadian government in BC and Toronto that only cater to very few people. It is extremely difficult to be registered. This leaves many not covered, especially casual users
