Whilst pondering over some of the older posts in a mild haze of chemically induced calm, I came across a thread inquiring about the scores people got on their ACT and SAT tests. Immediately I noticed that the claims were qite remarkable, relatively speaking, as the average scores seemed to me to be higher than the average scores at the best universities around the nation.

Which got me thinking.

Are we, as drug users, a smarter subset of people? If so, why? Is it because we use drugs? Is it the kind of drugs we use?

I asked myself this question long ago, and in fact my parents have asked why such an intelligent person would want to destroy their brain. I replied that I was actually expanding my mind by most of my drug use, although I must admit that this is a fairly naive idea and not one that I am currently conviced is correct. That being said, there is no doubt that there are some intelligent people who post here. Test taking abilities aside, I can deduce from the language of some of the posts that the mind behind the syntax is a bit above average to say the least.

How many of you think that acid or DMT made you smarter? In the sense that it was an experience like no other, it necessarily added to the data bank of my mind and in so doing did increase the memory from which I draw my cognitive conclusions. So in that sense, it certainly made me smarter. How much smarter? I can't say. Testing wise I score at the absolute top of the spectrum, but I also exhibit symptoms of extreme ignorance and genuine stupidity, even excluding my tendencies toward a destructive type of addiction. Perhaps this is a result of schizophrenia.

Which leads to another thought. It has been suggested that schizophrenia is exacerbated by heavy psychedelic usage, but I honestly feel that the exact opposite is true. Compounds such as DMT helped me to construct an inner syntax that transcends words, and therefore is a type of intelligence that is not strictly vocabulary dependent (from a lexicon of words, not images).

I have postulated that there is a language that in and of itself is alive, wherein the symbols actually think for themselves and arrange themselves into ever increasing complexities until there arises a cognitive piece of information.

Surely this is the essence of consciousness?

um, im pretty sure the range in intelligence of drug users matches that of the general population. ive met genious types as well as complete morons that enjoy psychoactives. that being said, of course the experiences you gain from psychoactives add to your life experiences and boost your intelligence in that regard. personally, ive grown and learned from my drug use, but that doesnt mean the average intellect of drug users is higher than the rest of the population.

the bluelight demographic isn't exactly representative of the general population of drug users in the world. also, people who like to post their SAT/ACT scores are usually ones who performed relatively well on those tests--which doesn't really mean anything in any case.

i also don't think drugs can enhance or detract from your intelligence in a significant way. it's all about your lifestyle. and there are drug users belonging to many diverse lifestyles.

and mental illness can definitely be exacerbated by using psychedelic drugs. people in poor mental health or who have a history of mental illness in their family should stear clear of psychedelic drugs because it's proven to push people over the edge, aggravate existing mental illnesses, or trigger/hasten the development of mental illnesses that one is genetically predisposed towards. it doesn't matter how profound you think your experiences on psychedelic have been or how you think you've expanded your mind through them, the safety of using psychedelic drugs when you are in poor mental health has nothing to do with whatever potential you see in psychedelics for expanding human consciousness.

and i'm pretty sure this thread is in the wrong forum.

Most tests don't actually reflect a persons intelligence though, just the amount of time they dedicate to study. Also what thursday said, bluelight isn't representative of the drug using community, generally I find people here to be alot smarter than most drug users I've met.

I understand what you mean...and agree..but there is something else to take into account. Your mind going to waste.....while you're sitting there thinking about what role DMT and LSD have played in your life, non drug users are reading books and studying and working towards their goals.....it depends on how you want to define intelligence. Generally speaking i feel that most drug users are more self centered and concerned about their own immediate needs than others...cause face it...you like getting high....which is self indulgence.....and thus you're just sitting in idle...according to the brains of the "constructive world". Lord knows how many books i could have read and how many classes i could be done with and aced already had i never done drugs. But then my mind would still be far down below at that "psuedo-intelectual" level where I think I'm superior to others because i spend all my time studying and getting A+ grades.

Using drugs of abuse...after one has taken DMT/LSD, keep you in idle more than anything...cause you've already learned the lesson...now you're just repeatedly throwing yourself back into the cycle over and over again, instead of moving on to whatever lies next....yes, without drugs.....whereas the non-drug user is continuously progressing onwards and upwards...towards their goals...albiet their general thought consciousness is always going to lack that of what you learn from psychedelics...so one could assume there is only so far that they can go....

but how far can you go? I dont see myself going anywhere but here, then blinking, and im here again, and I completely lost point of this thread.

I think someone that takes LSD has the ability to score much better on the said tests, if they become devoted to scoring good on the tests, but how often that happens I would assume is low...cause a lot of people that take acid stop caring about such worldly things..money/success in the social heirarchy...even though money IS important....you only need so much to live comfortably....and some may not need/want to go to Harvard to get there.....

wtf, im still rambling.
PS - This belongs in the Drug Culture forum.

ACT/SAT test scores dont really mean anything in the long run, except that you are good at answering multiple choice english and arithmetic problems. Simlilarly with IQ test--this was a test originally invented to see what level retarded people where at, it was never really meant to be used on the general populace. Certain people LOVE to post their IQ, like if it's super high it actually means something about their self-worth and standing in life. Pfft. For the record i've never take an IQ test and I did average on my SAT score (i'm not a good test taker)

There are things like street smarts, emotional aptitude, so many things to consider. Since there are millions of drug users obviously there is not going to be one answer, but many. I'm sure you just got the conceited notion that most drug users are either very intelligent (if you use drugs) or are very dumb (if you are against them)

Again, everyone: If I don't receive a topic report I don't know that something needs to be moved. Please use the report button in the future. Moving to DC as it's a better fit.

Depends on the drug I think.

Cannabis - Generally lower then usual.

Heroin/Meth - Depends on which stage people are at. During the honeymoon stage I actually find people to have increased intelligence. Once addiction sets in then it seems to taper off dramatically and I would say actually reduces intelligence.

Psychedelics - Anyone can take psychedelics, I don't think it really does anything to your IQ unless you are binging on LSD.

DMT/Ayahuaska - Very intelligent users for the most part. Interested in shamanism and all that goes along with the drug in many instances.

I think my intelligence has increased due solely to the fact that when I'm wired and everyone else has passed by the wayside I spend most of my time researching every little thought that comes into my head on google and other search engines....

i dunno, i think weed has helped my cope with having a high intelligence and applying it in stressful situations by allowing me to relax and unwind after a hard day. As far as ravers and psychedelic drug users go, i've seen them run the gamit... the word "etard" is sometimes frighteningly true, but psychedelic users can also be very intelligent. I find that people that use salvia more than a few times are usually pretty smart and pretty strong of spirit.

The only drug that I think has increased my intelligence and awarness of self and the environment around me is LSD.

I smoke weed so that I stop running scenarios over and over and over in my head. A lot of the time it feels like my mind is racing, so I smoke weed to slow it down to a manageable level.

Meth has definately lowered my intelligence somewhat, now that I'm using it more responsibly it seems to have leveled off in that respect. But it is fucking up my short term memory and sense of time very badly.

E, I've never done that much and don't do it anymore. Other than opening up my emotions, I haven't noticed any ill effects. But I have seen "etards" and if you take it on a weekly or daily basis for multiple months, you will get fucked in the head.

Funny that this thread popped up, since yesterday I got to meet my pscho-therapist for the first time. He told me that I'm the smartest drug user he has met in his 25 years of experience. We did have a discussion concerning harm reduction and eastern philosophies.

I did well in school. I always got A's and B's, usually more A's. I was sometimes on the honor roll. I was homeschooled after fourth grade and I pretty much stopped doing school work in 8th grade because I became severely depressed. I did get my diploma by doing one of those high school diploma courses that you sometimes see advertised on tv. I got an A on the test. I can't remember the exact score. In the past year I have taken some online IQ tests and got scores ranging from 135 to 156. I do not know how accurate they are though. For some reason I have always felt that I was less intelligent than most people. I do not know why.

I do not think that drug use has had any effect on my intelligence. I did feel like I did some damage when I abused dramamine but after about six months I felt normal again. I usually feel more intelligent when I am high on opiates and I am better at doing a lot of things. It is probably just because it temporarily gets rid of my depression.

A drug aint gonna bring up your intelligence
it just makes your brain think in bigger ways

psychedelics do something good to your brain (long as you know how)
the feeling is like imagine your brain is the size of your hand. try and pick up a basketball or somethin, you can pickit up but not hold onto the whole thing
doin acid makes me feel like my brain is that hand but 5 times bigger so it can hold onto so much more w/hardly any effort.
it makes me feel like theres a stick shift in my head and before i could only go so far but after i can shift into any gear or direction w/no trouble....like it dont make you more ''intelligent'' but just puts more power behind your brain...
u feel like you know exactly what u mean with everything u talk about.

it aint intelligence
all it is is finally bein able to see over the fence at all the other possibilities and not just the ones youre used to

Aight i sound all new age blah blah shit but know what im sayin?

Yeah i take you r point but i've met some grade A morons who do drugs who knows perhaps you could devise a system to see if your curiosity can be empirically satisfied.
yours in blissful ignorance a grade B moron[suspected]

I was in pre-Algebra in 6th grade..but then ended up finally passing it in 8th. then first year of college i had to take algebra/geometry again for a specific major...and i said fuck it, and now i am where i am at. lol.

And i agree about the comment on DMT. LSD is like nachos, and DMT is caviar.

the average intellect of drug users/abusers is essentially the same as the average intellect of the general population

some of the smartest peopel i've eve rmet were users, and some of teh dumbest peopel i've ever met were users

the only difference is that users typically have openm minds, whereas the non-users typically just listen to what the gov't says and dont really think for themselves

^^ I think that’s pretty well said, except you could probably expand the government comment to even accepting what certain religions tell you, or what political parties tell you, or what the news tells you, or what pro wrestling tells you… it IS all about thinking for yourself.

depends on the drug really. i know a few really intelligent people that would put some junkies to shame. i know some people that binge that have about 5 brain cells and have trouble using them because they keep banging together in that huge vast fried space.
