AN Australian expat is on trial for drugs charges in Indonesia, accused of dealing from his popular cafe in the tourist hub of east Java.
Indonesian police raided the home business of former Darwin man Andrew Roger in May, allegedly catching him in the act of rolling a marijuana joint.
Besides the marijuana, the 51-year-old was also in possession of crystal meth and pills, police allege.

They’re pressing charges carrying up to 20 years’ jail and want him treated as a drug dealer.
But Roger’s lawyers argue he has relied on marijuana use for 30 years and deserves leniency.
In court in Surabaya on Tuesday, an employee of the Australian, Eris Setiawan, said he had worked in the cafe since January, not long after it opened.
He said he was summoned by the police to look at the evidence from the raid laid on the table in Roger’s room.
“I didn’t know what it was or where was it from,” he said.

Police allege Roger, also known as Roger Yeo, was with two women at the time of the arrest.
Mr Eris told the court he didn’t know of any “drugs party” going on at the time.
“During the arrest, I was in the kitchen,” he said.
“The cafe sells iced tea, rice, coffee. There’s no marijuana being sold at all.” At the time of his arrest, Roger allegedly told police marijuana was legal where he came from.
He told police he had worked as a contractor in East Timor.

Not sure if trumped up charges or stupid

Why would they trump up charges? Doesn't seem in their interest to imprison a business owner for 20 years. Going from a taxpayer to an expense for the taxpayer... Also his lawyers are not claiming innocence but asking for leniency because he has "relied on marijuana use for 30 years".

^ If that is true then he is pretty much farked I'd say.

Just goes to show that the threat of unjustly long sentences and death do nothing to curb drug use

In some countries the prisoners are required to pay rent. I believe this is the case in Indonesia.

Yeah in the whole bigger picture it doesn't but for me personally when I have been there I wont use weed and pills etc as I dont wont to risk being locked up there.

So I stick to shrooms and alcohol when I go there, as the shrooms seemed to be legal when I was there, as they were sold in bars and clubs and made into shakes by the bar staff. Really hectic trips those shrooms over there, I dont know why the Balinese government seem to think weed is so bad and shrooms are fine, as when I had shrooms I was on another planet, mega major visual distortions and hallucinations, was really fun, but near scary at times as it was so intense. I think it's safer to use weed than those shrooms personally.

(edit) Shrooms are apparently illegal there now. Or are about to be.

Aussie facing 16 years jail in Indonesia claims large drugs stash was for personal use

AN AUSTRALIAN man has pleaded with an Indonesian court that he is a victim of addiction and not a criminal, as he made his defence on drug-possession charges.

Andrew Roger, alias Roger Yeo, 51, was caught in possession of a stash of marijuana, crystal meth and pills during in a raid of his east Java home in May.

In his statement to the Surabaya District Court on Monday, Roger said he had bought two or three months’ supply of the drug because it was so cheap, and there was no evidence that he was selling or distributing the drug.

He said he used marijuana to relax and that it helped him be productive. He has previously testified if he didn’t use the drug, he suffered from anxiety and insomnia.

Roger, who says he’s a former police officer and waste contractor, testified he had been using the drug since he was 15.

On Monday, Roger told the court the 16-year jail term demanded by the prosecutor was like a life sentence for him at his age and in his condition.

Defence lawyer Erick Komala asked the court to punish his client as an addict and send him for treatment, not jail him.

Komala disputed the prosecutor’s decision to charge Roger for possession without taking into account a police investigation that indicated he was an addict.

Roger will appear again in court on January 7, when the prosecutor will make his submission.

If he was caught with -
800 grams of marijuana, 9.2 grams of crystal meth, ketamine, ecstasy pills and Happy-5 pills (nimetazepam), 0.57 grams of ketamine
I find it hard to believe he had those amounts for personal use, and I find it hard to believe the Indos judges will believe that either, but if some major bribes have been paid they might cover it all up and say only smaller amounts were found and that he is an addict and it was all for his own use.
