Interesting. Prince Phillip is a massive twat in any event.

The queen marveled at how the president managed to stay awake from the jet lag. President Obama detailed his schedule from the morning, mentioning that he had "meetings with the Chinese, the Russians, David Cameron. And I'm proud to say I did not nod off in one of the meetings."

Prince Philip, already chortling in the background, blurted: "Can you tell the difference between them?"

The president, trying to smooth over the awkward comment from a man known to make such gaffes, offered diplomatically, "It's all a blur, of course, of course."

I am honestly surprised that you guys can even notice the difference in accents between states, i think we all sound the same. The only difference I can notice is between country/city.

One thing which does piss me off about the Aussie accent is when foreigners (especially indians, sri lankans etc) put it on and use colloquiel expressions such as... G'day, Mate (especially that one) etc etc.
 
Those 'foreigners' are mostly citizens of this country and proud to be so. If they used colloquial Indian expressions you'd probably be bitching about them to go home.

In all honesty, and i'm sure most other will agree, the differences are really only limited to certain words and the inflection of particular sounds within words.

It's not as though you can have some one from Sydney and someone from Adelaide speaking to each other and sounding completely different.

The South Australian way of saying the word 'No' is a case in point. Someone from Sydney will just say no and it will be a fair representation of N - O. Speak to someone from Adelaide though and (and its bloody hard to put into text format) it's more like 'Noy-eh'.

When I lived in the states the use of 'O' on the end or start of any word was a dead give away that I was Australian. Until then most people thought I was English
 
Yeah, when I was in the U.S. I kept getting teased about pronouncing no "noy", though they said my friend from Adelaide said it "noy" as well.

People kept thinking I was from Austria. Maybe because I wasn't really tan with blonde hair. Or riding in a kangaroo. Damn I got asked some stupid questions.

One of the things I get taken the piss out on the most is the way I say water. Everyone at work now always asks for a 'war'dah' :)
 
im from queensland, i don't really notice my accent at all, i hope i don't sound like a bogan :S melbournians have cool accents, but apart from that i don't really notice how other australians talk... oh but we do seem to make up words in NQ, or shorten words to the point where you can't recognise the original word, so i can understand why it might be hard to understand.

on a semi-unrelated note american accents make me cringe (minus new jersey!) jersey accents are awesome. all british accents are friggen amazing. french accents are hot too and new zealand accents>> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdVHZwI8pcA

Im just gonna put it out there that i think our accent is damn well awesome. It's relaxed and down to earth! I am proud, and wouldn't want it any other way.

Mofo's can laugh at our accent all they like. Fug em'
