Australia’s ice crisis deepens as a new wave of cheaper, high-purity form of the drug is about hit our shores
EXCLUSIVE: Warning, graphic images may upset some readers.
CRIME authorities and hospitals are bracing for a new wave of cheap, high-purity ice, fearing drug syndicates will deepen the drug’s national grip by lowering prices.
Australian Crime Commission chief executive Chris Dawson believes high prices paid for methylamphetamine in this country are unsustainable and the cost of the cheaply made drug will soon fall in line with Asia and Europe.
Mr Dawson said Australia’s ice prices are “right up there in the western world.
“I suspect it is going to come down.”
He said he had also been warned by US authorities to expect a flood of cheap heroin, which in the US has become more affordable than synthetic black-market opiates such as OxyContin.
Most ice users are poly-users who often take opiates to come down from ice binges.
For hospital emergency departments already routinely dealing with dangerously psychotic ice users, lower prices are expected to cause surge in arrests and hospital presentations as usage increases.
“It is a huge concern for us,” said Professor George Braitberg, who heads Royal Melbourne Hospital’s emergency department where staff restrain and sedate ice users in states of mild to extreme psychosis every day.
Police across Australia are seeing an increase in the purity of ice hitting the streets, which they concede are now flooded with ice.
