Aussie Music. Awesome Local Bands yet to own a jet

^^ Find that hard to believe, breaka but seeing I haven't heard anything from or about them, I will hold off judgement. Do they get played on RRR or PBS? Are they playing any gigs around town?

The Ooga Boogas are also up there amongst the best rock outfits from australia.

Make up your own mind. Also, they play gigs just about every weekend. They are in New York at the moment kicking up a storm, so they probably havent played a gig in a month or so, but look at that! They are supporting Glenn Hughes from Deep Purple in April. You could check them out then! Their myspace does no justice to hearing them live, they have a MASSIVE following in Melbourne... being the elite music fan that you are, Im VERY suprised you havent heard of them! Also playing at ding dong lounge this friday night i remain corrected !

Oh and it looks like their overseas following is even BIGGER!

"UK Newspaper ’The Sunday Mercury’ calls "Down To The Bone" rock album of the year!"

Also, I just searched and listened to ECSR, and not only do they sound like shit they are playing sweet little gigs in Tallarook! At a venue call BRUZZY BARN! Aww, bless! New York one day guys, one day ;)

Just checked their myspace page and they ain't my kind of thing.

They dig whitesnake. Nothing further needs to be said.

Great thread MazDan. I'm a big lover of Australian music too, it's one of the reasons I love Triple J so Goddamn much. :D

The following come to mind - I'll take a look at the list and make sure I haven't doubled up on anyone's suggestions:

  • Cut Copy
  • Pnau
  • Empire of the Sun
  • Faker
  • John Butler Trio
  • Silverchair
  • The Dissociatives
  • Muscles
  • Pez
  • Drapht
  • The Herd
  • Birds of Tokyo
  • Josh Pyke
  • Cog
  • Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
  • British India
  • Bliss n Eso
  • Art vs. Science
  • Little Red
  • Something With Numbers
  • Ash Grunwald
  • The Butterfly Effect
  • The Getaway Plan
  • Children Collide
  • Sparkadia
  • Gyroscope
  • Rise Against
  • Pendulum
  • Dukes of Windsor

While this list is succinct, it doesnt really adhere to the thread guidelines. 98% of those bands have made it very big time and are signed to labels, and tour constantly, sell records and play sold out gigs. Oh an most of their music is commercial rubbish, which allows these awards.

^ It doesn't?

So I would love to hear about one of the more established groups or musicians you love and also one of the new up and comers that has done something for you.

MazDan was looking for 'established' and 'up and comers.'

And besides, making it big in Australia is not making it big. I'd assume only a couple of those bands are getting decent air play overseas.

Oh im so sorry. My mistake. I guess im not awesomely perfect and magical all the time :( I would prefer it though if we could share music that isnt commercial rubbish we have all heard before ? That would be nice.

^ Ohh I didn't realize that's what this thread was getting at. I immediately thought of AD/DC who are massively big time overseas.

I have hundreds of Aus Hip Hop mixtapes from totally unknown people. There are some real gems in there, but most of it is crappy. :D

One local act with amazingly energetic & fun live shows is Wild Marmalade. I'll definitely check out emDee Mazdan; sounds like it could be a similar style :)

Has anyone heard Leader Cheetah? I read a good review of their first album the other day so might track it down.

Edit: no one's mentioned Augie March yet? I guess they have made the big time though...

Ooh Augie March! Loved them getting #1 in the Hottest 100 a few years ago.
Aussies make beautiful music even if our hip hop is a bit special. Muph and Plutonic are my fave coz they're heaps good!

Yeah Im a big fan of local tribal sounds used to create quality music.

I loved yothu yindi obviously but there are some even better acts out there if ya look around.

Whats the Wild marmalade suggestion belarki??

Breaka............regards Aussie hiphop being crap.............is it only crap to us cos we are so indoctrinated with the american stuff or is it genuinely crap?

Like i used to hate our police shows but now I think maybe they are not so bad........... was it cos I watched so many US cop shows? ie the same reason for hip hop??

I quite liked that kiwi band scribe.

So the questions begs, what are you going to be wearing to Bruzzy's Barn ?! :D
Yeah that's the way to judge a band's quality, where their playing 8)

So you don't want to hear about "commercial rubbish" but what if it's playing in New York? They must be awesome then!

Sorry babe, but you got no cred.

Angus' album is not out yet I thought? Start of April the website says... at least that's what they told me. These are my faves....

triplej have been playing some of the tracks on his album, sounds great!!
(P.S. thanks for the head's up hoptis! =D)

Yep, triplej featured their album last week. It's not really my style but it sounds good nonetheless :)

And my 2c on Aussie hip hop:
It took me a LONG FUCKING TIME to even be able to stand listening to 10 seconds of Aussie hip hop. It grated on my eardrums for so many years.
But I've given it a good chance, and now I can listen to some of it, in particular Bliss n Eso, Urthboy and Muph & Plutonic.
In my opinion it shouldn't even be compared to US hip hop/rap. They're are completely different styles of music. No comparison is valid.

If you're even mildly intelligent you'll agree that Root! is hands down the best band in Australia. If you're a melbournite and have not seen them so far you suck. And if you're a Sydney sider they've only been here three times in small venues so you're forgiven unless your name is Yarni and I've invited you three times.

I have to agree with you there. Most of the people I know who like Aussie hip hop don't listen to a lot of hip hop from the USA. I prefer Aussie hiphop but realise they're two completely different sounds and styles that they're hard to compare.

Sleepy Jacksons anyone?
Has Little Birdy been mentioned?

Solo artist, mate ;). If you like him, maybe check P-Money, Deceptikonz (spelling?), and maybe King Kapisi (get one of his first two albums, he went downhill after that - I say maybe because he's great but a bit different from Scribe).

Cheers for this thread guys, have to admit I've hardly heard of any of the bands mentioned..will have to check some out. (I like Architecture in Helsinki and their live show was great and full of cute girls :D)
