Im hoping to move to melbourne soon, before april hopefully.

what festivals usually take place in and near melbourne, im interested in what are the best festivals, especially for drum and bass and dubstep, and pretty much any other electronic music. And also how strict on drugs and stuff are these places? what should i expect?

thanks for any replies and sorry if this thread has already be done Mods.

yayo =D

Melb get alot of festivals, and alot of DNB and electronica. It's pretty pointless to start mentioning names of events or festivals, as there are so many.

You should expect sniffer dogs at most major mainstream (popular) festivals. Smaller clubs and stuff are less likely to get hit by drug dogs, but it still happens. There's heaps of threads or posts about it, just use the search button.

Finding festivals and acts you like will be simple if and when you move to Melbs, like living in any major city all you need is the local street press and to keep and eye on flyers and posted bills. Sites like in the mix and resident advisor offer all the info on tours and venues and tickets too.

future music festival
good vibes
stereo sonic
rainbow serpent

very very strict, don't bring or take ANY drugs into the event or you WILL get caught, no doubt about it - infact, just don't take any drugs at all and go for the music.

firstly to the OP none of these festivals play dnb or dubstep. if you are looking for dnb and dubstep they are mostly held in clubs around the city. look on inthemix.com.au for events under the melbourne thread, i post there regularly.

as for drugs - fairly easy to take into club nights, never had any problems. however large festivals such as the above often do have sniffer dogs and have caught 50 people at a time. but still people regularly avoid them and bring drugs in anyway

i think catching up to 50 people at one time should give you an indication of how easy it is. how many thousands upon thousands rock up to those festivals, and i reckon at least 80% are dropping something.

i'd just avoid the festivals cuz they're chockerblock with wank stain teeny poppers. that and festivals are so watered down, commercial, and expensive money making operations which just makes the weekly club scene die in the ass cuz no ones going out anymore, and any event organizers want the serious bank from mega-douche parties.....

support the club scene, its what makes melbourne melbourne, and dont buy into the festival wank fest thats killing the scene that makes this city wonderful. just my 2 cents...

agree strongly with this - not matter what type of edm you are into. festivals are terrible these days, especially for dance music. the crowds are a lot friendlier in the club scene, the sound quality is usually better and you are genuinely supporting artists.

as i mentioned before you will struggle to find good dnb and dubstep at festivals in melbourne anyway.

I'll keep all that in mind, and make sure not to bother with festivals as much, and stick to clubs. its just that here in the UK its the other way about, the club scene is filled with drunks taking shit piperzine pills and cut coke whereas the festival scene is more vibrant, more lenient on drugs and usually a better experience.

So i'm assuming that you've never been to rainbow serpent before??? 8)

Imo my opinion there are good and bad festivals.

Though these might not be to your liking because they do not pay much in the way of dubstep or drum and bass, doofs (parties out in the bush, generally play psy trance, and go for several days are good). Nice open space, smaller crowds, down to earth and friendly people. No violence. rainbow serpent is the big one, but maitreya and strawberry fields are good too. Pyschedelics are the drugs of choice at these events, though of course many other things are consumed.

On the otherhand are your mainstream festivals like summerdayze, good vibrations, future, parklife. They get big acts but they are very mainstream. The crowds are pretty shitty. lots of roided up fuckers, lots of bogans, and agression. Though these events have alot of gorgeous women and it is pretty easy to pick up. These big events also have a higher police presence, and often sniffer dogs. it can be harder to source drugs at these events.

I personally prefer doofs and festivals to clubs. I like big crowds and the kind of big acts these festivals pull. However clubs are cheaper, you have more chance to talk (doofs are great for this too) and if you go regularly will end up seeing the same people and make great friends.

The best drum and bass and dubstep events I've been to in Melbs have been at Brown Alley and they're launching DubStation on Saturdays, on Sat Feb 5th. I'd definitely be checking that one out.

Lots of awesome electronic dj's have been playing at Roxanne Parlour too, which is a pity since it's such a shit venue. Too bad you missed Opiuo there a few weeks back! Catch him at Rainbow... ;)

Doofs are my kinda thing. Cannot wait for Earth Freq up here in QLD :) I go to all the mainstream and hipster festivals as well heh, and there are a few cops and the like around, but as long as you're not silly about what you're doing you should be fine :)

This post makes me incredibly happy. I've been going to Brown Alley a bit lately, mainly to check out the german techno, but am keen to see some dub nights at an awesome venue!

I was annoyed to have missed Opiuo at Roxanne, fingers crossed Rainbow makes up for it!

Watching Alex and and Allison paint to some twisted Shpongle tunes will be a sight to see (and hear), followed by some spoonbill man I don't think you can get much better for a few hours of your time. And baby burgers om nom nom.

did any of you go to Defqon 1 Festival back in september? If so how did you enjoy it?

Hi YAYO, welcome to bluelight :) Threads regarding specific events, festivals, music scenes etc are bettere suited to the Aus Social forum. Note drug discussion is discouraged there.

As already stated you're most likely to encounter sniffer dogs at major events & festivals (and at points of public transport around them) but this doesn't necessarily mean they couldn't be used to target certain clubs on occasion too. My advice would be that if you're taking anything illicit then use some discretion, no matter where you are or who you're with.

Agreed, the line up just keeps getting bigger and better (despite the delay due to rain/flash flooding)
