Aus- Private clinic selling patients takeaway ketamine, syringes

A commercial medical clinic with branches in Sydney and Melbourne has been selling ketamine to patients seeking treatment for depression and teaching them how to shoot it up.

Aura Medical has been offering a "DIY" option that allows patients to take home packs containing the highly restricted tranquiliser and syringes, meaning they can dose themselves with the powerful drug at home without medical supervision, the ABC reports.

Former staff and patients told the ABC that patients were aggressively encouraged to take the treatment, which can cost up to $1200 for a month's worth of injections – around eight doses.

Former patient Jennette Jenkin told the ABC that when she said she couldn't afford to pay $300 a week for the injections, the clinic dropped the price.

"So they said we will give you a discount, (they said) make it $260."

Ms Jenkin, whose family has been heavily affected by depression, said that once the course was finished, she was advised to take more of the drug for her own safety.

"They said things had changed, that I would need another six injections, and I just couldn't see myself affording more.

"I started to question things, even the first time I saw them and how short my appointment was, they didn't require anything from me ... no confirmation from my GP," Ms Jenkin said.

Earlier this month Graham Barrett, a professor at the University of Melbourne, resigned his position as director at Aura Medical, citing a conflict of interest between his research and Aura's profit-driven ethos.

There has been much debate about the efficacy of ketamine, a schedule 8 "drug of dependence", as a treatment for depression; research conducted by the University of Adelaide found that it had some short term benefits, but the Black Dog Institute says any benefits are outweighed by the danger of taking the drug.

In January Professor Barrett claimed that the drug was 75 per cent successful in treating depression over the long term.

The drug is largely used as a tranquiliser for horses.

First thought: yum :p

But seriously, it's disgusting that they're abusing people's desperation for treatment to make such an outrageous profit. These people could buy street K and have enough to last them anywhere from a month - 6 months (depending on the dose the clinic is using, I'm making a pretty wild guess here) for what they're paying this clinic for a single injection. At least the director had the moral fortitude to realize this and step away from the project, but it's disgusting that this is even being allowed to happen.

This is exactly the thing we need to fear most as we move into an age of experimentation with the medical use of hallucinogens - greedy profit mongerers who abuse the desire people have for health and happiness for their own gain in the short term and strip the field of any sense of scientific and medical legitimacy in the long term. If this behavior isn't nipped in the bud it could set the field back by decades, which is exactly why this kind of treatment needs to be properly regulated and take place in a controlled, holistic environment where hallucinogens are utilized beside more conventional treatments and long term therapy and behavior modification.

A vial is well under $100 and has many more doses then that.
This is why we need to be in control of what we take an why, not some money hungry nobody.

Gotta make it as sensational and scary as possible. I didn't read how its widely used on kids for general anesthesia or twilight BC its safety margin is high and its short lasting.

This is just ppl selling k for an outrageous profit. I order vials o line a few times from over seas and its always been cheap as shit. Its great it works on depression so well but self administering k without medical staff esp injecting is kinda not what you think when you think treatment lol.

Sort of reminds me of my previous MMT clinic which had (and may still have) a zero tolerance policy regarding patients who couldn't pay for their dose before being allowed to ingest it. Didn't matter how long I was on the 'liquid handcuffs,' nor how high the dosage - if I wasn't covered by insurance and couldn't pay the same day, they had no ethical issues about me going into withdrawal. I mean, I could understand if I had owed a past due amount and wasn't paying it when I said I would, but that never happened. So yeah, those greedy fucks...

Mine will let you first accumulate a huge debt then they will detox if you do t set up a payment plan. I swear those places are evil, as a patient you get to see the inner workings of how most pplview junkies as a commodity in the rehab indistry.

More funds is what its all about. Its 80 a week without insurance, that is practically a dope habit. Luckily of you have I surance you might not even have to pay at all, or pay very little.

Yup fucking disgusting.

It's amazing how well ket can help for these type of things, if not nearly as well as in the mid-long term than a longer acting NMDAr antagonist would. Oooo and especially opio w/d, not to mention a host of other issues - although for sure it is no panacea. Fuck SSRIs/SNRIs/etc. that take forever to take effect, rarely seem to work, more rarely seem to work well, and aren't still sometimes under patent. What did I forget to add to that list?

With the longer acting NMDAr antagonists a SAM type module would be AMAZING. I'm just not sure how well that would work in the case of nasty treatment resistant depression or some such "dis"order. NMDARrrr :)

Still, at least there is something like this operating, however egregious their prices and policy. I would basically (almost) kill for something like this in my area, especially if they took insurance :\
