Aus - Lethal heroin injection: friend admits killing mate after bucks' party

A man who killed one of his best mates by injecting him with heroin after a drug and alcohol-fuelled bucks' party has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in a Sydney court.

After a long night trawling Sydney's pubs and clubs on January 3, 2009, Greg Wood, 33, and Daniel Gray decided to try heroin despite neither man using the drug before.

A short time after injecting each other at the Citigate Hotel in the inner city, Mr Wood died.

Mr Wood's widow, Kirsten Wood, later made an impassioned plea to the NSW State Coroner, Mary Jerram, indicating that she did not blame Mr Gray for her husband's death and asking that he not be tried over the incident.

"I am sure it would further extenuate mine and Greg's family's grieving," she wrote.

Despite this, Mr Gray, also in his 30s, was charged with unlawful killing, an offence under the broad category of manslaughter.

Having initially indicated that he would plead not guilty to the crime, this morning he pleaded guilty in the Downing Centre District Court.

He will face a sentencing hearing later this year.

Wow, that would be tough to live with the rest of your life. Plus having to go to public court and be sentenced probably to jail time. The news article slants the story kinda like the guy did it on purpose. I think it's the headline mostly.

^ Yeah true about the headline, they were obviously both wonting to do it, and did it and it was just a tragic accident, as his wife said she didn't want him charged, it's a shame they went through with charging him.

^doing heroin for the first time, IV while drunk is just not a good idea, even if you'd previously occasionally shot heroin and weren't naive it to it, it's a bad idea.....bad mix and a waste of heroin....

they must have just randomly come across it...or were looking for something else and thats all they could find...

either way, thats a shame....RIP

It is sad.

I'm sorry if i sounded negative, but that is my view on the matter.

My GF died in her room, why - because someone didn't call an ambulance. My best friend died when some idiot walked out on him after he OD'd. One of my other best mates died from an OD in the hall way of his apartment with people sitting in the lounge room, why did he die - because no one called a bloody ambulance.

I have OD'd numerous times and survived every time, why - because some called a fucking ambulance.

I also learned first aid and used to put people in the recovery position after OD and call the ambulance. Common sense imo.

Yeah drug mixing is pretty fucked. Im usually pretty strict about that. If Im doing a certain drug, I wont drink alcohol or vice versa.

I can imagine how scared he was though and in those times--people aren't thinking straight! Maybe he thought he just passed out...

I'm sorry about all your loses. That must be tough. :(

When I read the title of this article my heart broke and felt extreme sympathy for both friends and his widow.

Then I read "decided to try heroin despite neither man using the drug before." Although some of my sympathy has decreased, albeit just by a little.

Why, why, WHY, if you haven't done HEROIN before, would you choose the IV ROA for the first time you do it!? That's just fucking crazy! I don't doubt that there's people in the world (and possibly even on BL) that IV'd heroin the first time they tried it and survived with nothing negative happening, but that still doesn't make it any less crazy!

Like fuck...what a shame.

This is awful.
I hate how it makes it sound like the friend did it on purpose though...way to accentuate his pain and guilt.

Damn man, you been through some shit. Sorry to hear that. Must be hard to think about sometimes.

I read about this article quite a while ago (I should have searched, there might be something here already) but from memory these guys had taken a fair amount of drugs and alcohol prior, maybe pills and coke or something like that.

It would be hard for the wife and the mate to live with the consequences, as Aussie said it's a real he didn't call an ambo.

My question is as follows:

How did they randomly decide to use heroin, find rigs, and hit all without ever having done that before. First time IV use is much like losing ones virginity you keep poking around until you get it in, even worse if your drunk.

^ yeah pretty much this

It would take a skilled hand to get an IV on the first poke. That, or you have some amazing veins and get lucky enough to hit it without the talent it takes.

It was easier for me to learn how to swim, and how to ride a bike, than to learn how to IV.

deja vu, im sure i read a story of the same thing happening only a couple months ago in very similar circumstances

too bad the guy's friend is getting tryed, its both of their faults really

Well there you go. If you mix alcohol, coke, heroin and pills, you really have noone to blame if you die. Once again, "evil illegal drugs" will get the blame, but its really the responsibility of the user that counts.
