Aus - 'Ice' inquiry hears need for focus on drug use causes

A Victorian parliamentary inquiry into the drug 'ice' has been told efforts to address methamphetamine use have to focus on the underlying causes.

A parliamentary committee is investigating the supply and use of methamphetamines in Victoria, with a particular focus on ice.

It held a public hearing in Traralgon yesterday.

Debbie Stoneman from Latrobe Community Health Service says education is important but there is usually an underlying cause for drug use that must be addressed.

"I've been in this role for nine years, never have I nursed a person who ends up dependent on a drug who started with just occasional use," she said.

"Always there are underlying issues and those issues are sexual assault, family violence, abuse.

"It's not about propaganda and scare tactics, it's about reality and showing really and truly what this picture would look like if you make this choice now.

"You make this choice, you accept these consequences and this is what the consequences look like."

"Always there are underlying issues
I think this is true for most cases
and those issues are sexual assault, family violence, abuse.
I think this is not true.. I think the issues can stem from anything that can causes major discomfort.

These statements back up the "drugs aren't the problem" theory.

Wait. This is STILL going on? Holy shit, it's been like 6 months already. That's some awesome fucking budget they've got up on Spring St :?
