Ice epidemic: Methamphetamine detected in 1 in 3 drivers tested in parts of regional NSW, police say

Methamphetamine, or ice, has been detected in the system of as many as one in every three drivers tested as part of a police operation in regional New South Wales.

Assistant Commissioner John Hartley said the recent operation in central western NSW turned up an alarming number of motorists with illegal drugs .

"Mudgee had an operation at the weekend. One in three drivers had ice in their system," he said, adding that drivers in Orange returned similar results.

Assistant Commissioner Hartley told a Senate hearing into road safety an increasing number of regional police stations now had testing equipment to detect drugs like methamphetamine, cannabis and MDMA.

He provided some test results from June, which he said illustrated the problem.

June drug driving figures:

Goulburn - 109 positives from 820 tests
Lismore - 170 positives from 633 tests
Newcastle - 278 positives from 1360 tests
Macquarie Fields - 178 positives from 780 tests
Assistant Commissioner Hartley said the number of drivers testing positive for illegal drugs was increasing across the state.

"In 2014, our detection was one in 25 across the state generally, so far this year it's one in 13," he said.

In contrast, drivers detected drink driving numbered one in 250.

its news, its sensationalised.

^ agreed. Sensationalized shit.

And a more subtle example:

Assistant Commissioner John Hartley said the recent operation in central western NSW turned up an alarming number of motorists with illegal drugs .

"Mudgee had an operation at the weekend. One in three drivers had ice in their system," he said,

Is having meth in your system included in the definition of "motorists with illegal drugs"?
Because, when I hear "motorists with illegal drugs", I assume that they are carrying or hiding the drugs.
Not "transporting" them in their bloodstream.

Record numbers of truck drivers test positive to drug ice during blitz

ALARMING numbers of truck drivers are being caught behind the wheel while high on ice, with a record number testing positive to the drug in a police blitz this week.

In just eight days, 30 truck drivers tested positive for having drugs in their system and two-thirds of those were on methamphetamine.

It comes as police figures show the number of motorists testing positive for ice doubled between 2012 and 2014.

Police across the country are cracking down on truck drivers for vehicle compliance and drug and alcohol testing as part of a month-long operation.

They said the number of positive tests was worrying.

n the first few minutes of arriving at a police stop in Orchard Hills on Thursday, The Saturday Telegraph witnessed the driver of a 40-tonne vehicle allegedly test positive to methamphetamine.

The driver was banned from driving for 24 hours and his test was sent to a laboratory for further testing. If the lab test returns a positive result, the driver is then issued a court attendance notice and can face a maximum six-month licence suspension and a $2200 fine.

The Traffic and Highway Patrol team, working with the Random Drug Testing Unit, will test anywhere between 30 and 150 drivers in a 10-hour window during the month-long operation.

They use oral swabs and a secondary test to detect the presence of methamphetamine, amphetamines and cannabis.
“There’s a whole range of offences,” Senior-Constable Garrett Thebus said during a random truck stop this week.

“Somehow they’ve obtained it, which is an offence. Somehow they’ve administered, which is an offence. I don’t tolerate it, I don’t like drugs. It’s more than unfortunate, it’s dangerous — highly dangerous.”

Police catch 12 Ballarat drivers on ice in one night

A police operation which caught 12 drivers affected by the drug ice on Saturday night shows the high usage of the substance in the region, Ballarat's most senior police officer says.

Superintendent Andrew Allen said those drivers caught under the influence of methamphetamine showed a complete disregard for the safety of other road users.

On Saturday night alone, police from road safety blitz Operation Regal detected 12 drivers in Ballarat under the influence of methamphetamine.

They also nabbed three drivers under the influence of cannabis as part of the operation, which finishes Monday night.

Police units testing for illicit drug use set up in several locations across Ballarat including Sturt Street and Creswick Road.

Metro train driver caught on ice

A Metro train driver was high on ice when he drove through a stop signal earlier this month, prompting an automatic drug and alcohol test in which a cocktail of drugs was detected in his system.

The driver was suspended on the spot and later quit during an investigation. Metro is not pursuing any legal action against its former employee.

The revelation that the driver was in control of a six-carriage train while under the effects of a mix of methamphetamine and amphetamine was sparked by a minor safety breach, in which the city-bound Sunbury train he was driving passed a red signal by just two metres on the approach to Albion station. There was no risk of collision, Metro says.

The incident occurred just before 4.30pm on June 6.

“On this occasion, the driver misjudged the distance he had to brake before the red signal because he was distracted while looking for a person trespassing, which had been reported to him,” Metro spokeswoman Larisa Tait said. “Once the driver realised this, he applied the train’s emergency brakes before the train passed the red signal.”

The driver phoned train control to inform them he had passed a signal at danger and was told to drive the train to Albion station where it was pulled out of service. He was relieved of his duties and tested for drugs and alcohol as is standard.

“The driver involved was immediately suspended pending investigation (this includes urine samples being sent to a laboratory for further testing),” Ms Tait said. “During the investigation phase, the driver tendered his resignation. We will not be pursuing any legal action.”

The company says the incident was the only positive drugs reading in almost 700 drug and alcohol tests it has conducted on its staff in the past six months. Metro train drivers must have a zero blood-alcohol reading while at work.

Your math is so wrong....

278/1360=20.4%
179/780=22.9%

Still not 33% but alarming imo

Is the Aussie media just now catching on that some truckers like to take meth so they can stay awake and travel further?

Looked right at 3am. I must have punched the numbers in backwards..whoops.

Technically:
109/820= 0.13292682926%

article is still bogus...

avg is actually:
