Australian Customs and Border Protection Service (ACBPS) officers in Sydney have seized approximately two kilograms of ephedrine concealed in herbal tea packets.

On Wednesday (15 January 2014) ACBPS officers at the Sydney International Mail Centre inspected a package of six sealed boxes sent to Australia from China.

Examination of the boxes revealed cartons of tea bundled with clothes.

The cartons of tea contained 81 tea packets that further investigations revealed to contain ephedrine, used for the manufacturing of illegal drugs including methamphetamine or ‘ice’.

ACBPS Acting National Manager Cargo Operations, John Ikin, praised the officers who discovered the seizure.

“This shows once again our skilled, resourced and experienced officers continue to detect illegal drugs that can be so damaging to our communities,” Mr Ikin said.

"Customs and Border Protection continues to adapt to new techniques and methods used to bring drugs like these into Australia.

“Attempting to import drugs or precursors into Australia is a serious crime, and if convicted you could face a serious fine or even gaol time.”

Ephedrine is a precursor substance used to manufacture amphetamine-type drugs, such as methamphetamine or 'ice'. It is prohibited to import these substances into Australia without a permit.

Media Release: Two charged with importing meth in lamp bases

This is a joint media release between the Australian Federal Police and Australian Customs and Border Protection Service.

Two Taiwanese nationals have appeared before the Sydney Central Local Court today charged with importing 10 kilograms of methamphetamine in lamp bases.

The man and woman were arrested in the Sydney suburb of Hurstville by Australian Federal Police (AFP) officers late yesterday, Tuesday 14 January.

The investigation began on 7 January 2014 when Australian Customs and Border Protection Service (ACBPS) Air Cargo officers examined a consignment originating from Hong Kong. The consignment consisted of 10 boxes described as containing lamps.

ACBPS officers performed an x-ray and physical examination of the boxes. Located inside the bottom of each lamp base was a white crystalline substance which presumptively tested positive to methamphetamine.

The consignment was then handed over to the AFP for further investigation and forensic analysis. It is estimated that each lamp base contained one kilogram of methamphetamine, bringing the total concealed weight to 10 kilograms.

AFP investigators commenced a controlled delivery operation and subsequently conducted search warrants at a property in Hurstville. The 27-year-old man was charged with importing a commercial quantity of border controlled drugs, contrary to section 307.1 of the Criminal Code Act 1995. He was also charged with attempt to possess a commercial quantity of unlawfully imported border controlled drugs, contrary to section 307.5, by virtue of section 11.1, of the Criminal Code Act 1995.

The 25-year-old woman was charged with attempt to possess a commercial quantity of unlawfully imported border controlled drugs, contrary to section 307.5, by virtue of section 11.1, of the Criminal Code Act 1995.

Or charge 25 and 27 year olds to prison time and ruin the rest of their lives.
