Aus - Hot market for 'legal' cocaine

ADULT stores are selling a synthetic cocaine called White Bull for $100 a gram. This is twice the price of old-fashioned amphetamines that bikies used to cook - and we were told it's stronger than the real and illegal stuff.

White Bull is part of a $200-million-a-year catalogue of legal highs that adult stores are marketing as an offset for the drop in DVD sales because of the prevalence of online porn.

The man behind the counter at Love Play had only two little bags of White Bull left for sale. He said the store sells out every weekend. ''Less is more with this stuff,'' he said.

White Bull is an apparently legal substitute for cocaine, which retails illegally for $350 a gram. ''The feeling is that of cocaine, speed, ecstasy,'' he said.

Meaning it keeps you awake, a bit horny and somehow sets a disco beat rocking in your head. It also makes your heart beat faster, and put on a hot glow that suggests one's thermo-regulation system is out of whack.

''But it doesn't make you grind your teeth,'' said the merchant.

What's in it? He didn't know.

Fiona Patten, of the Eros Foundation, which has assumed the role of being the representative body for the legal high industry, hadn't heard of White Bull.

She knew that coke substitutes were selling out in adult stores every weekend, and that they were also selling from petrol stations and convenience stores.

She said the market in legal highs was worth $500 million a year, and 40 per cent of the market was run out of adult stores. ''Which is where it should be contained. We want it regulated, not illegalised.''

Paul Dillon, director of Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia, hadn't heard of White Bull either. ''It's probably the latest version in the new range of synthetics and won't be around next week.

What you are going to see is this will get a bit of media attention and it will disappear. Something new will come on the shelves next week.''

Last week we reported that the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction had found that every week a new psychoactive drug was coming on to the market as a ''legal high''.

Mr Dillon said that declaration was based on 2011 figures.

''They're actually being produced at a faster rate than one a week,'' he said.

^ Thanks, if a mod wishes to they may like to remove anything that might go against BL terms. Maybe because it is a media story it might be ok, im not sure.

It's a bit like an ad really, promotion and all. Not sure what to think of this right now.

'The age' has a decent reputation I think, although I don't trust any of them really.

i didn't even mean like "quality", more just distribution. if it's your local HS's newspaper then ya you could be a vendor trying to pull a quick one. if it's a major circulation paper, *they* usually make sure what they print is acceptable, so as long as we're not messing w/ copyrights and whatnot i cannot fathom the issue.

For me it's whatever. Porn shops selling psychoactive chemicals is not exactly BREAKING NEWS.

Do they mean new chemical entity, or new brand? I'm guessing the former, seeing as there's like 14 quatrillion cannabinoids,

It's a major newspaper here.

Good to hear numbers.

so people are willing to spend that much money on an unknown substance just for the sake of it being legal? where do they find these people?

and can that article possibly hype up the product any more?

What is this obsession with not letting people get high and portraying every drug as bad. They say it has similar effects as cocaine and ecstasy, and we all know that people who do those drugs are insane criminals.

It definately made me want to buy it.

Yeah no shit. At first I was like fuck yeah, but then I saw the price and was like wtf.

Then I remembered the price doesn't matter since we don't even know what's in the stuff.

Wow.

Hey Aussies is this true? Because I knew everything was more expensive in Australia but $ 350 for a gram of coke and $ 100 for a gram of some packaged RC is insane ..

I was actually just pointing out a failed attempt at protecting society from a perceived menace, not wether our not out should be on our forums.

where did you get the idea that the age was attempting to 'protect society' in the 1st place?

and re price- remember this stuff is LEGAL(well, you know what i mean). That is so big it's not even funny. There are a lot of people that, for whatever reason, simply do not have any contacts for drugs (maybe just moved or on vaca and not near a city center), or for hwatever reason cannot have unclean piss (or risk driving/possessing scheduled narcotics). For many of these people, paying double or more over market price, to get an unlabelled "party product", is way preferable to nothing!

The scene in my area is incredibly weak compared to what i hear of - never even seen a bath salt, and all we get are overpriced cannabinoid blends. That said, some of them are strong as fuck and unique/interesting in their own right, and still worthwhile IMO.

the good thing about this is some media outlet will get some analyzed and then pubish the results so we can find out the active substance(s) and then we can possibly get it at a fraction of the cost

Coke is usually around $400/gram but something straight from a large South American brick is often passed off at nearly double.
