AUS - Hidden dangers in love drug fad of nexus

A "LOVE" drug from the 70s is emerging as the new ecstasy among Sydney club goers.

Use of nexus or 2CB has risen over the past year, police figures show.

The National Drug and Research Centre has reported use was up from 2 per cent in 2010 to 9 per cent in 2011.

"NSW Police drug seizures in the second half of 2011 showed similar increases in percentage of seizures testing positive for nexus," a police spokesman said.

And the number of people in Sydney charged for possession of the synthetic drug - illegal in NSW since 1994 - is rising.

It was sold commercially as an aphrodisiac under the trade name Eros before it was banned around the world in the 1990s.

"It is one of a diverse group of new and emerging psychoactive substances," the police spokesman said.

"Drugs such as nexus and ecstasy are typically produced in filthy backyard laboratories with no health or quality-control process.

"While nexus is on the rise it still only makes up a small number of seizures compared to amphetamine-type stimulants including MDMA and methylamphetamine."

Nexus has a reputation as the "ultimate" drug - mainly propagated by its creator, American pharmacologist Dr Alexander Shulgin.

"It first surfaced in Australia in the mid-90s," Drug and Alcohol Research Training Australia director Paul Dillon said yesterday.

"Back then the manufacturers were the users. It is now quite popular overseas."

Mr Dillon said nexus and 2CB were spoken about frequently in chat rooms.

"Regular ecstasy users would look to it as their tolerance to MDMA increases or just because it is a 'new' thing," he said.

Back in the early 70s, nexus was used by US therapists to help people "bond" and promote "self awareness".

It is known to enhance sexual pleasure and became a cult pharmaceutical among chemists, psychologists and other therapists. By the '90s it had hit the dance and party scene before being targeted by the law enforcement agencies around the world.

The most noticeable physical effects of nexus or 2CB use are anxiety, agitation, facial flushing, sweating, muscle clenching, poor co-ordination, shaking, chills, tremors, dilated or enlarged pupils, and increased blood pressure and heart rate.

Feelings of fear, anger, and distress are often sparked by use of nexus or 2CB.

Police and health officials said the long-term physical and psychological effects on users of nexus or 2CB were virtually unknown.

I think they have a template for these 'scary new drug' articles and they just fill out the relevant fields with the chemical name, random slang terms and a mashup of side effects. Lazy journalism.

There's no massive explosion of 2-CB use, it's either being sold as MDMA in pressed pills or being used by the small crowd of trippers who like to experiment with obscure psychedelics, that's it. The media just love to jump on any new drug they hear about (even if it isn't new) so they can try play it up as 'the next big drug scourge' to sell more papers.

2CB has appeared where I live, known as 'eccies dipped in acid', I'd kill for a silly slang term.

Wow! This is JUST the chemical I've been looking for! I can really see why it is soooo popular now 8(

I think I dosed with this stuff back in the early 90s. It was the day after a party and, thinking it was a regular E, I really wasn't expecting it to do much. I got the first alerts five minutes after eating it and everything seemed a bit too much. I noticed some face morphing. I probably would have enjoyed it if I wasn't so concerned about someone there (who probably took two) who was gooning out big-time and upsetting everyone else by swearing at them, impersonating Donna Summer, and then taking a fancy to one of my friends (who really didn't want to know) and chasing him up and down the stairs and all over the house as he tried to run away from her. It looked like a Tom and Jerry cartoon.

Hah, just because you just heard about something, Mr Journalist, doesn't mean it's new or 'the next big thing'. 2C-B turns up around my area pretty often, actually. People call it 'tripstacy' which is a term that actually bugs the crap out of me, especially because 2C-I and 2C-E turn up pretty frequently too and they all get lumped in together. Or people think they really got 'acid laced pills' *eyeroll* But most people who take it are either pill kiddies who will eat anything or trippers who know what they're after, not just someone who's MDMA tolerance went up.

2c what now?

But seriously, this was old news when I was 15, nevermind now. What next? "HOT NEW DRUG ON THE STREETS EVERYBODIES GOING MENTAL FOR COCAINE!"
