Aus - Forget Kings Cross - addicts say methamphetamine is readily available here

METHAMPHETAMINE is easier to get in Brisbane than Sydney’s notorious Kings Cross.

An Australian Institute of Criminology report drew on questionnaires completed by 550 adults held at watch-houses throughout Australia during the third quarter of 2013.

While cannabis continued to be the most common drug used, the study found 47 per cent of the sampled police detainees reported using methamphetamine in the previous 12 months.

Of those who had used in the past 30 days, more than half said they had never experienced a lack of the drug.

“This indicates that methamphetamine has remained readily available across Australia, despite an increased number of seizures by law enforcement,” the report said.

Three hundred and seventy-five detainees also volunteered a urine sample, with 33 per cent testing positive for methamphetamine — showing a 10 per cent jump in positive urine tests in less than a year.

The study found that, on average, Brisbane watch-house detainees reported the highest “ease of access” at 8.6 on the scale — with 1 signifying “extremely hard to get”, and 10 meaning “readily available”.

This was followed by Kings Cross offenders at 7.9, East Perth at 7.8 and Adelaide at 7.1.

The study found more than 30 per cent of the sampled Australian detainees noted the price of methamphetamine had risen in the past three months.

Just 14 per cent said the drug had become harder to get.

“…the majority reported that during that period they either reduced intake or abstained from using methamphetamine, without increasing their use of alcohol or other drugs,” the report said.

“In this way, reducing methamphetamine supply appears to be effective in terms of harm minimisation.”

Police made 21,056 seizures of amphetamine-type stimulants in 2012-2013, the Australian Crime Commission said.

The report said methamphetamine was a drug “of particular interest” in Australia.

While acknowledging the detainee population was likely to diverge from general drug users, the report said it allowed a “rare insight into users’ self-reported altering of alcohol and illicit drug use during periods of reduced methamphetamine supply”.

I don't understand the metric they use in this kind of reporting. Surely evaluating strength/quality/potency is a more accurate measure of how drug busts affect availability and use than "whether people can still buy something called methamphetamine"?

We all know that dealers/producers are still going to sell regardless of whether they have a reliable, high-quality supply or not - reducing that just means more cuts and/or substitute chemicals. And a lot of people will still buy.

Yeah it's nonsense. The media have been on a fear mongering frenzy over meth for years, the "meth epidemic" is the go to topic on any slow news day/distraction whenever they don't want people thinking about other, larger issues.

It's been bad in Adelaide for a good 10 years. I can't even communicate with my lil Brother anymore, I f***ing hate Ice/Meth. North Adelaide is the worst we have people all over the city scratching there faces n bein sketchy as. This drug is one that feels like it will end this city.

i live in adelaide and hardly any of the people in my scene do meth as far as i know

i can imagine it would be pretty big in elizabeth and salisbury

north adl a bit further out does have a sketchy vibe

Trust me, it's not restricted by suburb. There's plenty of meth use going on even in Parkside, Fullarton, Dulwich, Norwood, Kensington, Goodwood, etc, and in the Hills, out East and West, a lot of it around Marion and Mile End. It's just that it's more visible once you go north of Prospect up to Salisbury and Elizabeth or way south to Noarlunga, places like that are where the people who've bottomed out or who never really had a chance live and where most of the dealers are located, and generally speaking people are more likely to throw empty baggies or needle packaging away on the Street, whereas in other suburbs people keep it low key, in the privacy of their own home, and dispose of the signs of their use more discretely.

It's not something I'm into much anymore, but apparently the price has also dropped to match the East Coast prices (allegedlyas a result of the darknet/plain market saturation).

I don't know what scene you're in, but any Friday/Saturday night in town a decent chunk of the crowd surrounding you on Hindley/Rundle/Gouger St's are on it, and to a lesser extent it's around those areas even on weeknights. It's really ingrained here, probably second only to weed (used to have a lot of K and MDMA to balance it out, but the cops took care of the first one and the drought took care of the second, although I believe it's been making a bit of a comeback the last few years, last two times I went clubbing in 2013 I managed to find good pills with ease - clean, if not as strong as I'd have liked).

Aw crickey! Can you believe how stupendously inept these prohibitionist bureaucrats and their political overlords are? Granted, there's some willful overlooking and corruption mixed in there as well, but still, how bloody discombobulated can a government really be to not accept their place in history as continuously flogging a failed concept with a never-ending supply of tax payer dollars?

Frankly I'm astonished how they still have a job. Any other profession and these fucking idiots would have been let go and their drug war written off as the worst investment in the history of investments a really, really long time ago.

Sure, some people claim that they're actually succeeding in this putrid endeavor - that it's their plan all along to maintain the status quo. I remain skeptical of that, but I dare not say it's impossible.

Rich people get high too, though maybe they order coke from the darknet these days? But I've known more than one heavy meth user from that area - worked with one of them just after she finished her stint in rehab.

And yeah there used to be a ton of other SA people here on BL, don't think many of them post anymore though.

Well still a few of us here. My Bro moved near Dulwich, friend in norwood both completely lost to meth. It's not restricted that's for sure.
