AUS - Drug court helps avoid re-offending: study

A study has found people dealt with by the South Australian Drug Court are less likely than others to re-offend.

The special court was set up as part of Adelaide Magistrates Court in 2000 as an anti-drugs measure.

It diverts offenders with drug problems to a treatment program and their participation is often taken into account during sentencing.

A study by the Office of Crime and Statistics Research has monitored offenders involved in the program from 2004 to 2008.

It has shown offenders who did not complete the drug court program were more likely to be re-apprehended on drug matters.

The study has found 32 per cent of those who attended the drug court did not re-offend, compared with 20 per cent of offenders who did not take part.

WOW! What a revelation!

Who would have thought that treating drug problems as a health issue, rather than a criminal issue would have benefits? This is just blowing my mind! Oh wait, only any person who has studied the effects of drugs, the majority of doctors, ex-police, ex-public health ministers, ex-everything relevant, the majority of non-christian mental health workers who've worked with people who have drug problems, or basically anybody in the world with any common sense at all. What a fucking ground-breaking discovery.

Unbelievable. Next thing you know we'll be treating people who have a different colour skin as equals, or those who are attracted to the same sex as human beings too. What is the world coming to? Surely a rapture is due?
