Aus - Could you murder a pizza? What killers and rapists eat in prison

SOMETIMES you could murder a pizza.
The killers inside Australia's Supermax prison, who between them have murdered more than 40 victims, have a go every week at a pizza supreme or margherita, as well as Streets Blue Ribbon ice cream, Tim Tams and popcorn.
They also get smokes and, while not under conventional methods, drugs and the occasional alcoholic drink.

Apart from the lavish final meals of US prisoners prior to their execution, prison food traditionally has a bad reputation.
But in Australia, some of the nation's worst criminals will spend the rest of their lives dining on dishes such as pasta Alfredo, Singapore noodles, tofu and pancakes.

And on the dinner menu at some of Australia's largest prisons are quiche, roast chicken, casserole, lasagne or curried chicken.
Out in the main yard of one of Australia's largest prisons, in Goulburn, where murderers and rapists such as the Anita Cobby killers, the Janine Balding killers, the Skaf gang rape brothers and the Khan brother rapists spend six hours a day in rows of segregated cages, have a large and varied menu.

Selections include roast chicken, lasagne - vegetarian or beef - pies and spinach and ricotta burgers.
The food is prepared at central locations and is made up from vegetables grown on prison farms and milk from prison cows.
The meals are cooked and then refrigerated in a process similar to airline meals, known as "cook-chill" and distributed to the different male and female jails.

Dishes such as roast shoulder of pork and beef pot pie Anglaise were designed to keep the most dangerous and violent prisoners in the US, including the notorious Al Capone, content, and less likely to riot.
In Australian jails, a combination of plentiful food and televisions in cells act as an antidote to violent behaviour during long years behind bars.

In addition to the supplied meals, prisoners have access to a lengthy list of food and drink items, toiletries and tobacco.
Each inmate can spend about $60 a week on these "buy-ups".
They use money put in their prison accounts by friends and relatives, or they spend their earnings from a range of prison jobs.

The 600 male and female murderers in NSW prisons may buy from a list of about 200 items, including dips, olives, popcorn, lemon lime and bitters, pub squash, Twinings tea, eggs, mozzarella and cream cheese, mixed nuts, a large range of biscuits.

And while plans to ban smoking in prisons are proposed, inmates still get access to a range of cigarettes and tobacco.
Drugs are a fact of life in prison and no regime of checks and surveillance by prison authorities can prevent an amount of cannabis, heroin, ice or pills such as ecstasy getting inside the prison walls.
And at Christmas, it's traditional for inmates to hoard fruit and make batches of jail brew for a bit of seasonal cheer.

The idea of people committing grave acts and then lounging around in prison seems terrible.
However, as I have said in another thread recently, I believe that prisons should attempt to rehabilitate prisoners, rather than punishing them.

I also believe in the power of respect and love.

Therefore, I would have prisons set up so that prisoners get respect as humans, which is probably what most of them were lacking, driving them to disrespect other people (their victims).
Many of the people in prison will eventually be released onto the public streets, and I want them to have a very different attitude when they re-join society.

Prisons now just make people harder, angrier, and more violent. That is because they are trying to punish the prisoners.

I want them to be forced to talk about their crimes, to work through them in group therapy sessions, to figure out why they committed their crimes and how they can never do so again. Part of that requires respecting them. If society doesn't respect them, they have no reason to respect themselves, and therefore no reason to respect anyone.

Therefore, I have no problem with them eating good food - especially healthy food. Giving prisoners low-quality food that really should be thrown away is terrible, imo. In order to help them change their lives, they need solid nutrition, a supportive environment, exercise, and motivation. The motivation can come from the threat of being put in prison - yes, even a prison with roast chicken. Having to spend a decade away from your family cannot be fun. But if we can help them change before their release, our whole society will be better-off because of it. If we can't, we will all just suffer more.

P.S. "Could you murder a pizza?" is a really lame title for an article.

I have no problems with good food being served in prison. Just being in prison is punishment enough thete is no reason to tale ot farther than that.

Australian newspapers, especially the Murdoch owned ones aren't renowned for their ingenuity. Unless of course, there's "boat people", or people seeking asylum in Australia by boat involved, then they can use the word illegal in some new and nonsensical way, such as "illegal boats" or "illegal vessels".

I don't really see how well they are fed as an issue, I mean it sucks ass beign in prison and while they do have some alright choices they are hardly getting 5 star restaraunt dining. It says somewhere in there it is similar to airline meals and I don't remember those ever being renowned for their quality.

This is just the sort of easy to write article that is guaranteed to get a percentage of the population angry for no logical reason.

And here I was thinking prisoners ate from a communal slurry trough. "quiche, roast chicken, casserole " pretty standard food obviously the author isn't much of a gourmand.

Couldn't give a fig about rapists TBH but there's something to be said for expressing greater regard for human rights and moral values than the people who are being punished.

I used to agree, that prisons should be for rehabilitation. This was when I was juvenile and ignorant. Only true crimes should be laws (theft, rape, murder.. Crime has an identifiable victim). And then prison is for restitution and punishment. Rapists and murderers get long, harsh punishments. How do you propose we "rehabilitate" a rapist? And why are you spending money to try?

sitting around in prison, smoking, causes health problems for the inmate population. Health problems cost money to "treat" (i use that word loosely - as prison "health care" is a joke). I spent 5 calendar years in Texas prisons. They also had a fancy looking menu - on paper. In reality, the food did not remotely resemble the menu description.

YEah that makes sense. Still i cant imagine quitting cigs in prison especially where there is fuck all to do must be very bad

Some homeless or struggling families don't get the shit these rapists and murderers do, no tv, no decent food, no drugs or alcohol, no exercise facilities etc etc.

I watched a show a while back and it showed some people in a high security Australian prison. One American citizen got busted for smuggling in a few tons of coke, he said it was the best prison in the world - not even comparable to U.S. prisons. That's one thing that we have going for us, I guess.

Also, our prisons aren't (yet) run for profit, which is a major positive.

That is very unfortunate but it really is a completely seperate issue entirely. If you are going to lock people up for prolonged periods of time you have to feed them something, I don't see any real reason it should be some inedible concoction. Poverty and famine are huge problems in the world, in my mind there is no good reason that any human being on this earth should have to go hungry, yet they do because the few with the most money would rather horde it amongst themselves than see it benefit humanity. I genuinely feel bad for the homeless and those who are struggling but in my mind the solution is not to deprive other sectors of society of decent food but instead to make sure EVERYONE can get a decent meal.

That looks about right, except for a metal tray and a metal spoon? Both dangerous weapons.

who cares they might get a decent meal once a week, their most not likely eating like that everyday. as for the drugs none of thats free

Whats up with all the fuuss baning smokes in prison? For fucks sake let them smoke if they want to

Not only is this a humans right's issue at heart you have to consider the money spent when these people live to 85 in prison because we make all their decisions for them. That's a huge taxpayer burden right there. I'm not as concerned about paying for their food as their college. The government wants me to pay for college unless I get incarcerated? Doesn't seem fair imo.

youre def not paying for the cigs, everything you buy in commisary is off your books, so if you dont have any money your not smoking
