The Queensland Government can't win the war against bikie gangs while it continues to prop up their business model through the criminalisation of drugs, writes Greg Barns.

...What Queensland Premier Campbell Newman should be doing is talking about undermining the business model that sustains some in bikie gangs and their allies. If he were to decriminalise drugs such as heroin and cocaine, for example, so that using and small time supplying were no longer criminal offences, then that would reduce demand and price. If he were to go a step further and legalise, through a regulated market, so called 'party drugs', cannabis and other drugs then the consumers would move to that affordable market where quality control ensured a safer product.

I like the cut of Greg Barns jib.

Yeah good article mate.

Barton notes that if addicts could access drugs via health services or other regulated providers, "then they would not have to go out and buy illegal drugs".

loads of comments after it too.

Enforcement has been recognised as a failure for decades - but the issue is great for media headlines, and law-and-order auctions at election time. Of course, up to a point, drug dealers want illegality, because it keeps the price much higher.

They don't sound as scary when you call them bikie gangs.

Yeah they dont sound scary at all, until they pull a knife or gun on you or surround you with 15 or more of their mates and bash the shit out of you. Then they sound pretty scary.

Even then they still don't scare me. But I have no fear of death or pain whatsoever. Ironically I suffer from a constant state of anxiety that is caused by intrusive thoughts and some CPTSD thrown in for good measure.

If 10-15 of these guys decided to kill me, quite frankly they'd be doing me a favor. I wouldn't feel that much, after the first few blows or thrusts/shots as the case may be. Pain isn't that bad. I've suffered from 2 disc herniations both with neuropathology - most of which I still suffer with to this day, fallen into hard concrete, fallen on my back on concrete after slipping on ice, cracked my tailbone, had my front teeth completely snapped off during an accident at the school gym, fell and my left arm snapped in two, and suffered numerous stings from wasps, jellyfish. I was stung by a pinkish-orange jellyfish that made my face feel like it was almost on fire. When I was 9 I was molested by a woman in her late 20s who threatened to whip my face with a large SUV antenna. My parents went through a messy divorce that same year, and then my mother took her life when I was 12. My girlfriend didn't tell me that she had an abortion (she lied to me telling it was a miscarriage) because her mother didn't like the idea of her daughter having a baby out of wedlock, I didn't find out the truth into six months after the fact and we'd long since broken up because of all the emotional turmoil that we were both going through, it went downhill very quickly after the "miscarriage". It didn't matter that I was 22 and quite capable of supporting a baby on just a disability pension and that my girlfriend was 3 years older than me and had a good job with plenty of prospects since she was in a reasonably uptown social circuit and could return to work in a very good position at her father's company 6 months after the birth with very flexible hours and superb pay. Lucky for her bitch of a mother I would have snapped her mother's neck like a twig if I was there when she'd convinced my girlfriend to kill our baby for such a ridiculous reason, but because I found out a long time after the fact, I ended up not killing her and she is one very lucky bitch.

Think I'm afraid of pain or even death? You are wrong.

Do you live in Australia? 'Bikie' isn't exactly a term of sunshine and happiness, you hear that shit you put your head down and mind your business seriously quick, they're different in Australia you don't find them like here anywhere else.

Sorry to hear that, you have been through alot.

i dont get why the article make it seems like this is unique to "bikies" (lol, in america you call yourself that and everybody laughs)

this is worldwide. organized crime makes the majority of its money from drugs. legalize, tax, and regulate them, boom, gov't gets billions a year, and crime disappears.

They're not claiming it's unique to bikies, but bikies make up a large portion of the gangs which run the drug trade in Australia, and the government likes to constantly 'wage war on them' and pass laws against them to drum up public support.

It doesn't sound funny to me, different cultures obviously. I wouldn't call a thong what you do either, that sounds hilarious putting a shoe up your butt.

Old school Bikies created and sustained the threatening image of themselves, nowdays the shirtless, lad-type 'bikie' just use the name for the reputation, they have nothing on what they used to be.

There are still obviously alot who do violence and murders and shit tho, but alot of them are not much when they are alone, but you never know, im sure there are both sides, some pussies and and really hard nuts and all sorts in between. I've heard a few stories of both.

Things like that episode at Sydney airport and the recent one on the Gold Coast are usually just bikies having blues with other bikies, gang war kind of shit I think, problem is it gets played out in public often terrorising people around at the same time.

I didn't say they weren't tough, just that the name sounds funny. I'm from Canada though, google Quebec biker war sometime.
